For me when I was developing my style, I started out by trying to make my art look as close to the art style of my inspiration as possible, which wasn't great. But, over time, I developed it an made it my own. Sort of like an experimentation period
The way to create a compelling art style, the mood you're striving for, isn't to draw exactly like an artist whose art style or narrative you like. You can be inspired, but if you're too inspired, it's copying, and you're just a subtype of that artist.
