OQ Head of Mission @Clarke_J_N pleased to meet with UK Secretary of State for International Trade Elizabeth Truss yesterday, including discussions on joint Palestinian trade facilitation efforts pursued in partnership with FCDO
We are a team of 60 staff in East Jerusalem, Ramallah and Gaza, led by Head of Mission, Dr John N. Clarke. We work in the areas of water, energy, movement and trade, rule of law and telecommunications. More detail at quartetoffice.org.
1/4 @QuartetOffice office HoM @Clarke_J_N back in #Gaza today, looking at water infrastructure.
Further to discussions in Ramallah about reconstruction needs for industry, and policy measures needed for economic growth, today @QuartetOffice visited factories at the Gaza Industrial Estate, damaged during the recent escalation, to hear from businesses first hand.
1/2 @QuartetOffice attended PENRA presentation last week outlining initial assess't of damage to energy infrastructure in #Gaza. Estimated reconstruction costs $15.4m, incl. $6.15m for first phase of urgent repairs. This work will support wider needs assess't, currently underway.
1/2 The Door-To-Door program helps Palestinian businesses trade by removing the need for costly back-to-back transfers of shipments from Palestinian to Israeli trucks at crossings into Israel. It has led to a significant reduction in costs for Palestinian businesses.
1/3 OQ HoM @Clarke_J_N is in #Gaza visiting the Gaza Power Plant. Before the recent escalation the plant generated ~75 MW; today the plant is generating ~45 MW and continues to suffer from insufficient fuel supply and lack of critical spare parts, reducing available electricity.
In parallel to immediate steps required to restore #Gaza’s water infrastructure to pre-escalation levels, expansion works on the EU-funded, UNICEF-implemented Southern STLV continue.
As part of ongoing engagement in support of the private sector, OQ HoM held discussions with Head of Gaza Business Association and Palestinian Federation of Industries on private sector rehabilitation needs and measures to support the restoration of Gazan industrial capacity.
Welcome resumption of electricity through four previously downed feeder lines into #Gaza. Entry of fuel as per pre-escalation arrangements now critical, as is fuel for onsite generation at critical civilian infrastructure.
