Pinning this for accountability (since I’ll have a 14 hour plane flight soon during which I plan to write)
I have the skeleton of a piece about the decline of elite governance over the last 1000 years, the sociological impacts of the Enlightenment and of WWI, the rise & failure of 20th C technocracy, and the post-Empire decline of Britain. I’m afraid this essay will become a book
"only net taxpayers voting" is how nearly all democracy was originally conceived people have a hard time because philosophically there is an enormous gulf between "voting is a reasonable way to achieve good governance" and "voting is about fairness"
honestly I think this is morally required to make democracies sustainable long term absent a growing population. do the math, think through the game theory, look at how the boomers constantly vote themselves more government pork and lower taxes. this would fix it.
did you accidentally build a city at a base camp, anon? did you build your identity around being a citizen of a city that was supposed to be a base camp, anon? did you become the mayor of base camp city, anon?
at almost every threshold there are a bunch of people who set up a basecamp where they discuss how to cross the threshold. some of those people do go on to cross the threshold, but those people tend to then become incomprehensible to most of those who are still in basecamp
I used to think the shiny new BMWs and Range Rovers in my gritty neighborhood were all paid for with drug money. Now I realise that only half were paid for with drug money, the rest were paid for by the motability scheme.
Several Independent and Aspire Tower Hamlets Councillors are standing to become MPs in Bangladesh. This is completely disrespectful to residents and taxpayers who rightly expect their councillors to be focusing on their duties in Tower Hamlets, which they were elected for.…
tbh I don’t think we tell kids how small the window is to be exceptional at many physical or intense intellectual pursuits. You basically have from 15-35 to become meaningfully world class at many things, which usually means starting in early teens
Incredibly important concept from Max here: virtually all prices in the UK are fake- you pay 350 a month for your car, your neighbour pays nil. You pay thousands for childcare as you earn £61k, but your colleague pays nothing as they earn £59k. This goes on and on. Our…
Prices aren’t real in Britain. Everything is distorted. Indirect subsidies, convoluted non-monetary benefits, financial repression, and environmental and social levies are baked into everything. The official 'welfare budget' is just the tip of the iceberg.
a lot of people misunderstand marriage and love. You will hear things like "marriage is a choice". But what does that mean? You will hear things like "marriage isn't like dating", but what does that mean?? The point of marriage is to create a unity which is much stronger than…
"ARE YOU LOVED SOLDIER?" "I AM LOVED SIR!" "LOUDER" "SIR I AM LOVED SIR" "ARE YOU LOVED?" "SIR I AM LOVED SIR!" "WHO ARE YOU LOVED BY?" "SIR YOU LOVE ME SIR!" "HOW MUCH?" "SIR MORE THAN THE WHOLE WORLD SIR!" "Good, and dont forget that"
the tendency of public schooling to reward obedience is especially evident in subjects like math, but it extends to the entire system by rewarding conformity/compliance over correctness/substance, it makes kids internalize that the point of thinking isn't truth but producing…
my boy got a 75% on a math test where he did 100% of the math correctly - including all logical steps - because of "presentation" and "laconic response phrases" this is the dream for a disagreeable math professor mom, who has a special interest in the epistemology of math😃
I went to university with an eerie fascination with epistemology. Other people seemed to have magical access to knowledge I lacked. It felt like a philosophical problem, and epistemology is worthwhile on its own terms. Still, the existential answer came much later: many people…
I don’t understand how everyone else just knew what to do. like before graduating when they were doing a bunch of micro-internships ready for careers in management consultancy and magic circle law firms. how did they even know those were jobs
Not bad but some work to go
Our first practice is Sunday afternoon - there are still some minor, optional but fun roles yet to fill! If you'd like to join please DM me! The actual play will be Nov. 7th
SF and Bay folks - Avalon is putting on a production of Plato's Protagoras. This is a casting call! We'll be reading our lines, full memorization not required. There'll be one practice Nov. 2nd, maybe a second that week, the play will be on Nov 7th. DM me if interested!
I'm writing an email to his teacher, the best part is I really don't care about the grade
50 years ago, about 1 in 3 of the people around you were children. Now it's about 1 in 5. That makes a huge difference when it comes to the availability of infrastructure for kids, convenient playmates, family activities. For a lot of young people, parenting just looks isolating
There's been an almost 20% reduction in the population under 18 between 1990 and 2024.
Has anyone wrote anything worth reading about Nietzsche drawing from the Sufis?
optionality leads to delaying commitment and skipping its benefits, will we feel the punishment of this sin and will the next generation develop new heuristics?
Seeing some recent posts about the Fractal reading group’s reading of "Gardens Need Walls: On Boundaries, Rituals, and Beauty" and considering hosting a read-through book club of the 2020 Sarah Perry essay collection Anthology notnothing.ooo/books/antholog…
