Biological Limnology Lab
@BioLimLab
We study biology, limnology, and winter in the Great Lakes region. https://biolimno.weebly.com/

It’s been incredibly cold this week, but our group has been staying warm! Our sampling for February is officially complete and we’re looking forward to March
How many lab members does it take to pull up one of our moorings? The answer may shock you. We had a fun Friday trip to service some of our sensors today!
In February of 2022 the @BioLimLab led 19 institutions in a synchronous sampling effort of the Great Lakes. A data paper was recently published, check it out below! aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lo…
!!New paper, fresh off the (electronic) press!!🚨🪱🦪 We found that quagga mussels reduce Great Lakes sediment mixing BUT that may not measurably alter geochemistry (in regions with low POM). Check it out here! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/fw… @BioLimLab @KatsevL @UmdLLO
Our team has been busy setting up and deploying sensor moorings this past week! And busy enjoying the sunset too 🌅
Large Lakes Observatory’s first annual Freshwater Discovery Day was a blast and a half! Thank you to everyone who came out for a fun day of science, and thank you to our lab members who volunteered at the event @DrewCheck @aliaunderwater @OkoboshiA
5 days left to get your tickets! Join members of our lab and other LLO scientists for Freshwater Discovery Day: a day-long event to experience the world of freshwater science. Plan on a day full of presentations, demonstrations, and a morning cruise! facebook.com/events/1196323…
A team that trailers together stays together
Our first sampling trip for WLN was a success! Three lakes down, many more to go ☀️
Meet Drew! @DrewCheck is a new lab tech joining our NSF-funded project on winter limnology. Drew graduated from UMD and is interested in Arctic ecology. She's excited to fill in gaps in winter limnology and hopes to continue her work in Arctic locations around the world!
Zooplankton community structure and diel migration patterns vary over hours, days, and years in the pelagic and littoral zone of a eutrophic reservoir congrats to @planktongirl16 for this paper, which was a huge sampling effort over multiple years! doi.org/10.1093/plankt…
Meet our team! Anthony Okoboshi is a first year PhD student researching seasonal shifts in lake biogeochemistry. He is interested in the seasonal function of lakes, streams, and rivers.
We're hiring 2 post-doctoral researchers @YorkUScience to model the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. We're a transdisciplinary international group aiming to co-develop solutions to improve ice safety. Deadline to apply: May 15. Please share.
Calling all winter enthusiasts! @BioLimLab PhD student Alia Benedict is currently running for ASLO student board. Her platform focuses on winter, student networks, and community science. Check out her statement (and vote!) here: aslo.org/election-2024/
Show as ya go! Last week, Bio Lim Lab wundergrad Drew Check and MS student Levi Feucht presented preliminary data on the seasonal eating habits of MN game fish. Both are seeing seasonal shifts in diet and lipid stores across species. 🐟
Our year-round study of Lake Superior benthos (with a focus on winter, of course) has been published in the Journal of Great Lakes Research sciencedirect.com/science/articl… 3rd chapter done✅, one to go👐
Check out our (@Sharmalab, @JoshCulpepper4, and John Magnuson) new paper - @ResearchGate: researchgate.net/publication/37… From early observations to modern research, lake ice records reveal the intricate links between climate, biology, and ice dynamics.
School's out 😎 Thanks to all who joined the inaugural Winter Research Network workshop. We represented 22 institutions, diverse backgrounds, and career stages. See you all out on the ice!
School is in session 🤓This week we're co-hosting a winter research workshop through the @NSF funded Winter Limnology Network. Today we learned about winter sampling methods and the power of team science! winter-ice.github.io/winter-ice/
Big win for #WinterLimnology #CitizenScience our twin expedition just got some intact sympagic samples!
