The SRNL Shielded Cells Facility includes the largest collection of cells with this type of capability in the country, allowing for material handling up to 5,000 curies of 1 Mev gamma radiation. srs.gov/general/srnl/f…
The facility includes 16 6’ x 6’ workstations with exterior walls made of 3-foot thick, high-density, reinforced concreate with an 1/8-inch-thick stainless-steel liner, and a 3-foot-thick cell shielding window featuring multiplate layers of leaded glass.
Replacement of the last 3 cell windows in the Shielded Cells Facility is complete. Additional steps will be taken to ready the facility for the Mk-18A Target Recovery Program, ASET & other long-term nuclear energy, nonproliferation & safeguards science and technologies.
SRNL completed its first focused ion beam scanning microscopy lifts of grout as a new method to measure diffusion in ultra-high-performance grout. The fib-SEM is being considered for developing a high-resolution contaminant profile with grout samples.
SRNL is working with DOE Environmental Management Technology Development & Florida International University to test & evaluate polyurethane resin foam to mitigate the release of contamination during dismantling operations on radioactively contaminated piping in legacy facilities.
