Shouldn't teachers experience this during CBPL? Analyzing literary text & discussing why the author started a sentence with a dependent clause, "Ignoring Odysseus..." Text analysis through a writer's lenses not only enhances comp, but also author's purpose @GreatMindsEd

If you follow me for vocabulary ideas, you must follow Jake as well. Please make sure to spend a few minutes reading this.
Teaching vocabulary shouldn’t mean leaving kids to guess from context. A story-based, explicit approach, inspired by Engelmann’s Theory of Instruction, can make new words both clear and engaging.
“The most effective teachers ensured that their students efficiently acquired, rehearsed, and connected background knowledge because this knowledge is necessary for skillful problem solving and critical thinking.” B. Rosenshire As a special education teacher, I have worked…
My latest with the brilliant @mcglynn3 argues that for the current "science of reading" movement to fulfill its enormous promise, it will require shifts in practice and the culture of teaching that are largely beyond the scope and influence of the standard education policy…
We had an impactful discussion about the current Poetry Unit by unpacking the TEKS, analyzing the connection between clusters, and getting a clearer picture on student expectations. These two are committed to meeting the needs of our 4th grade students at @FrancisES_AISD 💙💚
Reading #AllQuietOnTheWesternFront is no joke—but once you notice the writer’s craft, it’s stunning. Every detail, from syntax to symbolism, serves a purpose. A masterclass in language and emotion. @CurriculumMatrs @KnowledgeMatrs #Grade8 @GreatMindsEd @WitWisdomELA

Congrats to our friends at @Hunt_Institute on this powerful piece about improving literacy for ELs in Virginia. Grateful that @StandardsWork could be part of this-- 30 schools, 17 districts teaming up to boost literacy outcomes for multilingual learners! hunt-institute.org/resources/2025…
📚 “Everything starts with the curriculum.” When goals aren’t clear, expectations get watered down & students pay the price. A knowledge-based curriculum (standards) with clear goals is key to meaningful education reforms. New episode with Nuno Crato is out now. 🔥 Link below.
I used to read that the teacher was the most important in-school factor in student achievement. But it's clear that in fact it is the curriculum. Kids will do fine with an average teacher who implements an excellent curriculum.

Proud teacher right now! Partner A facilitates (higher language) while both discuss WHY! (Also, check out the wait time between them! My A partners and I discussed the importance of giving thinking time to their B partners when in partner work!) #bilingual #aldinestory @drgoffney
Strong hunch that the No. 1 question teachers ask themselves when designing and planning "centers" is not, "Is this time well spent?" It's, "What will keep the rest of the class busy so I can have time to work with struggling students?"
Mindless centers that reduce instructional time: “A goldmine of productive time waiting to be repurposed.”
Growing teachers during CBPL. Discussed how POVs can help readers understand the environment, but also narrow to one POV & character's mind. CBPL is where teachers learn. Showed a teacher that #theodyssey has small plots inside a main plot. This is the monomyth @GreatMindsEd
The winning ideas are all here from @rpondiscio & @mcglynn3. The rest of us can put down our pens.
New from me and @mcglynn3 for the @educationgadfly "Wonkathon" on the question, “What needs to happen for the science of reading revolution to fulfill its promise?" TL;DR: Policy alone doesn't change classroom practice. fordhaminstitute.org/national/comme…
"The science of reading (SoR) describes how children learn to read, not how to teach them well at scale. The two are not the same. Turning scientific consensus into classroom practice requires teachers who are capable practitioners, not merely compliant implementers."

Asking teachers to develop high-quality curriculum and meet the needs of 130+ students simultaneously is not a formula for teacher retention or student achievement.
