Making legal news less stuffy one email at a time @HearsayDaily. Ex-litigator. Former law clerk @SCC_eng and Alberta Court of Appeal.
Last year I launched my newsletter, Hearsay. It covers Canada's most important legal news, in a light and entertaining daily email. Hearsay returns tomorrow. Here's what you can expect in the first issue of 2024, and beyond:

Ontario Superior Court in Atikameksheng Anishnawbek v. Canada lets First Nation relitigate a case decided 135 years ago that affected the boundaries of its reserve lands. Good summary of it from @HearsayDaily hearsaydaily.ca/p/relitigating…
Law firm partners calling their favourite overworked associate whenever they land a new file
So, you can sue the state over unconstitutional legislation. I get that some people aren't happy about it. And I get that others love it. But can we at least agree on one thing? Floodgates hold a flood back. The gates aren't the flood.
It sure reads like: "Current SCC Justice O'Bonsawin showed us she didn't know the law". I'm surprised the Court of Appeal didn't soften the language on that one.

10 /11. Let’s not close the doors to brilliant judicial careers because of outdated and stigmatizing notions of depression and anxiety.

Great look at the Supreme Court of Canada's changing approach to interventions in today's @HearsayDaily which looks at stats since 2000. Seeing big shifts with TWU in 2017 and again after 2021 w/ practice direction & McGregor decision hearsaydaily.ca/p/intervention #SCC
This reminds me of a paragraph from a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision. Or wait... maybe that's something different.
@HearsayDaily with the best case summary ever: “If you prefer your outcomes in tongue-twister form, the Court ordered the province to reconsider whether to consider requests for reconsideration.” If you aren’t subscribed yet, you are missing out on some solid law puns + memes!
I had a great time on this podcast. We can do a lot more to make legal information accessible. Not just for the public — for lawyers too. Tune in for my rants about accessibility, and to learn about my @HearsayDaily writing process. Thanks @CIAJ_ICAJ for having me.

Some great stuff in today's @HearsayDaily looking at the length of Supreme Court of Canada decisions since 2005. Last week's decision in Dickson was close but not the longest. #SCC
It's on someone's desktop and it's named "Final contract v16(2) draft finalfinal for signing".
The biggest problem we hear from in-house teams: "I can't find my sh*t. Where is the last version of the contract that I worked on for this deal? Where is the stuff that I trust and previously used?" P.S. we also hear that the wrong version of the contract gets signed 😨
Me, waiting for the Supreme Court of Canada to hear more private law cases:
Today, the Supreme Court decided the following leave applications. decisions.scc-csc.ca/scc-csc/news/e…
Of the many things one can justifiably take issue with in the Court's decision this is not one of them.
I'm seeing a lot of this going around. It's important to be accurate. The Supreme Court said that a judge's reference to "a woman" was unfortunate because the judge wasn't referring to a point about women generally, but rather to the specific woman who testified. That's it.
This is just wildly deceptive, and seems to be a blatant attempt to spin a niche argument about legal errors into culture war fodder. The Canadian Supreme Court did say the term "a woman" in a ruling was confusing. But the problem was with the "a" not "woman." In short: -…
