Reading/writing about books and writers, our real and fictional worlds. Hosting the Greatest Literature of All Time. What are you reading/writing?

People who say truth is stranger than fiction must read pretty dull books, at least not the strange books I do.

New word I've learned: "stillicide". Sounds like a murder in a library. But apparently it's water dripping from an eavestrough.

I've never really understood term "psychological thriller". As opposed to those thrillers that don't arouse fear, excitement, horror...?

Literature in song: "Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head." Richard Cory, sung by Simon and Garfunkel, based on the 1897 poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson.

"L—d! said my mother, what is all this story about?—— "A COCK and a BULL, said Yorick——And one of the best of its kind I ever heard." Final lines of Laurence Sterne's hilariously gross and mixed up old novel, Tristram Shandy. (See my ******* take on it buff.ly/2cch1gZ )

"Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven." Famous line from Dante's Paradise Lost. Though better yet to skip both places — one's horrible and the other sounds painfully boring. #quotes #greatlines #greatliterature

"Where's Papa going with that ax?" Great lede of E.B. White's Charlotte's Web — a children's story! #firstlines #greatliterature

"A classic is a book which with each rereading offers as much of a sense of discovery as the first reading." Italo Calvino. I usually dread rereading a great book I once enjoyed (especially a long one) but afterwards I'm invariably glad I did it. #greatliterature

"…he is not and never will be a part of literature." Willa Cather on Mark Twain. I hate it when two of my favourite writers don't get along. #quotes #literaryquotes #greatliterature

I'm not a big biography reader (nor small biography reader for that matter), but for anyone who is, here's a new list just for you — the 33 Greatest Biographies of All Time buff.ly/JBheaxM. Is there a life story you think should be here but isn't? #greatliterature

I've tweeted Shakespeare’s "Brevity is the soul of wit" as a #greatline three times (four including this). Seems wrong somehow, doesn't it?

In a movie when someone wakes from a bad dream, why do they always spring up to a sitting position? Don't think I've ever done this.

If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself, then get someone in to fix it. #twistedcliches

If you lived every day like your last wouldn't you spend all your time in hospitals making your will and bawling "Why me, why me?" #twistedcliches

Remember not too long ago when every second bestseller had "Girl" in the title? Here's a look back at Gone Girl, a twisted thriller that actually twisted and thrilled—mostly. buff.ly/7glqoZi

"Don’t ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody." #Lastlines in J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye

"He died as we all do: as a rank amateur." #Greatlines in Philip Roth's Exit Ghost.

"I think that novels that leave out technology misrepresent life as badly as Victorians misrepresented life by leaving out sex." Kurt Vonnegut in A Man Without a Country
