This is why Niskanen focuses on legalizing both family size apartments *and* microunits & SROs The reality is ~all suburbs have too few 1-beds & studios (like below). Some cities also have too few family homes! Only way to find out is legalizing both
While not many new apartment buildings are getting proposed in LA, most now contain 3 bedroom units, due to the “public benefit” incentive program in CHIP. These two projects (both designed by the same architect) show very different approaches to providing 3br units. One has…
It still blows my mind that Jim Crow-era zoning laws—even literal bans on multi-family housing in wealthy neighborhoods—somehow got rebranded as progressive regulation.
We should build more housing but I do not believe that in expensive cities where it costs $1 million to build an apt, a market based, deregulatory approach to building that housing will create a city the working class can afford to stay in.
“We should never build anything because fifteen ruraloids might have to watch some trucks drive by during construction”
Zuckerberg is building a data center in Louisiana the size of Manhattan — while Meta runs ads about how small towns love their data centers, we found furious locals who plan to leave town completely.
It’s crazy seeing parking lots in Downtown Rochester, NY. The city should be as rich as Brooklyn today, but chose pavement instead
we need to talk about how bad St Pancras is at being a railway station, EMR and Southeastern crammed in outside the main shed, Eurostar cramped due to all the security and border checks, Thameslink hidden out the way, arguably worse functionally than Euston
Is there a more magnificent building in London?
A story of what was and could have been. And now some very powerful Hoosiers want to change how they build. We should talk.
The good people of Indiana live on top of some of the best limestone on the continent, yet they suffer to live in combustible, ephemeral structures that their children/grandchildren will have to replace 30-60 years. Indianians could raise dense limestone cities that surpass…
NEW: Photos have submitted for a £1 billion plan to turn under-used industrial land in Kentish Town into the ‘Camden Film Quarter’. The site would offer: 🏘️500 new homes (50% as affordable) 🎥11 film studios 🌲Public parks 📚Education facilities Before vs after 👇
Some folks choose suburbs for the bigger house & back yard. That choice is heavily subsidized by all of us. Others choose urban places with more public space and local amenities. Cities need to make that a GREAT trade. It’s what I call the #UrbanContract.
Oxford-Milton Keynes direct trains were due to start this year, but have now been delayed in a row over the "driver-only operation" that Chiltern Railways plans for the link. The RMT union is demanding "a guaranteed safety critical second person on board". independent.co.uk/travel/news-an…
there's a LOT to talk about in this map from the 2051 Metrolinx Regional Transportation plan so let's talk about it in a short thread (🧵)
Seems like there's some pretty interesting stuff in the 2051 Metrolinx Regional Transportation Plan
Barcelona continues to build *incredible* social housing 35 apartments in a 10-storey timber tower. Each home is a corner unit, and has access to a winter garden. Designed by Metronom
Are they actually fucking kidding? Literally 5 minutes from a subway station. Design literally in a classic style. And still the design is “excessive”. Committees of adjustment need to be abolished. Toronto’s NIMBY disease is out on full display 🤮
Example of what’s wrong with planning in Toronto: Committee rejects low-rise housing proposal 5 minutes from a subway and now the community is aiming to create an area heritage designation as a weapon against any future housing attempts. torontotoday.ca/local/real-est…
Periodic reminder that “having sidewalks” doesn’t make your neighborhood walkable. Your neighborhood is walkable when it is more convenient for you to walk than it is to drive.
Canada has not only the world's greatest supply of talent *inside* the country but we also have the world's greatest supply of talent *outside* of the country. 4m Canadians living abroad (40m pop) 5m Americans living abroad (340m pop) And you know the ones that left mostly did…

"If we want public space where we feel safe and welcome, and where we have a sense of ownership, we have to change mobility." Major changes are taking place in cities worldwide in the areas of housing, safety and sustainability—and women are the forefront: bit.ly/44jk3QR
Updated look at the future of Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) where over 46,000+ residential units are currently planned, including towers up to 74 storeys.
"The cold has returned to Paris & the bike lanes are still packed. It turns out the problem wasn’t the weather, as many said, but the lack of safe infrastructure." Drivers who claim “no one cycles in winter” are hot house flowers addicted to their little cocoons.
El frío ha vuelto a París, y los carriles bici siguen llenos. Resulta que el problema no era el tiempo, como muchos decían, sino la falta de infraestructura segura.
More new homes will be started this year than last, but the housing crisis persists. therecord.com/news/waterloo-…
I largely support unions...but Vancouver has proven that automated trains are SAFER than those operated by humans. It's beyond the pale to expose the public to a safety risk in order to make money.
Have a conversation with the median American voter abt public transit and you'll understand why they don't get cool anything ever
