someone over retirement age but on a serious note, it's someone that I would trust to "own a task", and operate with minimal supervision, while producing a technically sound solution. i.e: should be self-managing, guiding others), and strongly technically adept
A developer that has seen enough shit and learned enough fundamentals. This gives them enough experience to solve problems efficiently and to be a mentor for a younger generation of developers.
A developer who can take full ownership of a significant feature on a product, work with feature stakeholders, perform any research needed to implement, and help mentor and direct other team members contributing to it.
I was never fond of these labels. It lets people think the world is split in two and they want to get out of the worse halve as quickly as possible. I saw devs call them senior two years after leaving uni and I saw devs 10 years older than me who couldn't do anything...
Junior: tell me what and how to do and I’ll do it. Middle: tell me what to do and I’ll do it. Senior: tell me what you need and I’ll decide what to do on my own.
A senior developer has experience discerning between the "could" and "should". E.g. yes, you *could* do it that way, but given reason X, you *should* consider the following.
Dev Senior skills: - teamwork - analyze user needs - analytical thinking - good Sql - critical thinking - good on documentation - troubleshooting - programming experience ( 2 lang. At least) - attention to detail - problem solving - great communication - software design
Developer who has an advanced understanding of a particular language or stack. To the point where they could easily mentor a developer in that same language or stack. Not a big fan of seniority being the determining factor in this title
I, too, wonder about this. Things happen so fast and sometimes I smile when I read senior, etc What about Bootstrap 5? Everything is different and completely new, what senior? Anyone who does not open a book to read the newest things
Although probably responsible for a specific part of the project a senior developer should have a complete understanding of the application/project's life cycle from the beginning to the end and all the tools involved and should be able to coach/train/upskill juniors in the team
A person who does more googling than any human being on planet earth
Able to deal with crappy project managers and BAs on daily basis without Prozac 😬😁
