One of the benefits of garden based learning includes raising awareness and increasing knowledge about how looking after the environment starts in the immediate environment around us (Sustainability in Schools, 2014). sustainabilityinschools.edu.au/building-garden #UoNTeach #Sustainability #Rewarding

Why not give the students a #STEM gardening challenge? Let them decide on what plant species, the amount of water/sunlight their plants get. Encourage them to document their research and findings in the way they choose. #UoNTeach #Creativeminds #ICT #Responsibility #Gardening

A school in Melbourne is bringing the community together, including non- English speaking families. "Everyone cooks and everyone eats, no matter what language you speak, so we engaged the parents in the garden and the kitchen"(Noone, 2018). #UoNTeach #Communitybenefit #Progress

An excellent blog about how schools in Queensland have been adopting garden based learning. It is a perfect example of how the community is more than willing to get involved in educating our students about healthy living and sustainability. #UoNTeach gardening4kids.com.au/queensland-stu…

"Gardens become an opportunity to foster links between school and community" (Neilson, 2012). Students feel a sense of ownership of their school gardens and appreciate collaborating with others, including adults. #Collaborate #Community #21stCenturySkills cultivatingcommunity.org.au/wp-content/upl…

What a cool way to get our students thinking creatively by learning about how to code an interactive game #21stCenturySkills. I love that students can engage with multiple key learning areas while learning about valuable topics such as nature. #UoNTeach #Creativeminds #Technology

Celebrating a ‘Green Day’ event by sharing how #makered can engage students with nature. @scratch game developed by a 4th grader combining nature with gaming. Catch the leaves that fall in Autumn and don’t get bopped on the head by an acorn! #CSforAll So cool on the smart board!

Great to see there is so much community support when it comes to keeping natural environments healthy! A step further would be involving the community and our students in creating communal garden initiatives in local schools! #UoNTeach #NatureIsBeautiful #Keepitthatway

We celebrated National Volunteer Week by giving thanks to our #LakeMac @LandcareAust and Community Ecosystem Monitoring program volunteers. Together, they help keep our City's natural environments healthy and thriving #NVW2018 lakemac.com.au/news/2018/05/2…

Encouraging our students to think critically is an important part of 21st century learning. Here are some great questions to get that thinking happening and the discussion flowing in the classroom. #WeAreTeachers #UoNTeach #21stCenturySkills

"Not every learner processes thinking at the same speed" (McCarthy, 2018). Giving students time to consolidate their thinking is vital. #TeachBetter #UoNTeach #Extendthethinkingtime

What a great idea! Donating the food that is grown in the school garden to a great charity! This is also a great #wholeschool educational opportunity to record and compare what each year group has produced! #UoNTeach

I wonder what creative ideas our students would come up with if you asked them to design a garden to go into their school. Children feel a sense of ownership when they are involved in designing, establishing and maintaining their gardens (Pollock, 2015). #UoNTeach #Creativeminds

Garden based learning has so many educational benefits, whether it be learning about nutrition or ecological sustainability. Children can utilise their 21st Century thinking while getting their hands dirty! (Stayer, 2015). edutopia.org/blog/garden-ba… #Gardenforeveryschool #UoNTeach

"Global food demand is set to increase by at least 60 percent by 2050". We need to come up with innovative ways to produce our own food such as roof top gardens (Naidoo, 2018). What better way to encourage this than to get our students involved! #UoNTeach #SustainableFutures

Teaching our students how their recycled food waste and scraps can be turned into compost is a great way to encourage sustainable living. P.S they can also put into their communal vegie gardens at school. #Sustainableliving #UoNTeach
