Powerful and heartbreaking words from a frontline BC healthcare worker whose hospital was the site of one of many anti-vaccine passport/health measures protests held today here and across the country.
Adjusted for age difference, unvaccinated individuals are 12x greater risk of infection 34x greater risk of hospitalization 8x greater risk of death from COVID-19 than fully vaccinated individuals.
Of the 284 people in Alberta hospitals, 80% are unvaccinated, and zero people in ICU are fully vaccinated. You're just at such a high risk if you're without a shot now, much much more than any stage of the pandemic.
NEW: - 1076 new COVID cases in Alberta on 11747 tests (9.2%+) - 284 in hospital (+26), incl 59 in ICU (+2) - 1 new death - 8496 active cases (+565) #yeg #yyc #ableg #covid19ab
A simple way of thinking about today's data is that the 20% of unvaccinated adults in B.C. are responsible for about 80% of hospitalizations. But here's a deeper dive on the need to focus on the big picture.
NEW: people worry when they hear "40% of hospitalisations are fully vaxxed", but this chart shows that's actually good news. The more people you vaccinate, the higher their share of hospitalisations, but the *total* number in hospital is a fraction of what it would otherwise be
There are approximately 900,000 eligible British Columbians who have not gotten a vaccine shot yet. As we've talked about in recent weeks, they're disproportionately outside the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.
The B.C. government has finally provided some more comprehensive vaccine data to the general public. Continues to show the importance of getting vaccinated.
