Tough math teachers get lower ratings from students, because students like them less. However, students get better grades with the tough teachers than with laxer teachers. Reason #167 why student evaluations of teaching aren’t particularly useful. [Link below.]

Do any other teachers find the analytics they get for student access of their LMS utterly demoralizing? Asking for a friend. #teachecon #teaching

It’s NOT the economy! US Gen Z are doing superbly well!! Better than their parents, better than European peers. So the lurch to the right seems more like vibes - possibly fuelled by ideological persuasion on social media - @jburnmurdoch

Not sure Marc understands how wages and productivity work...

A world in which human wages crash from AI -- logically, necessarily -- is a world in which productivity growth goes through the roof, and prices for goods and services crash to near zero. Consumer cornucopia. Everything you need and want for pennies.

What an odd autocorrect for "effective."

My guess: the new Congress includes this funding in whatever big tax and regulation bill they try to pass, which Trump will take credit for "saving" (from his own EO).

1/ Buried in Trump's flurry of Executive Orders is a line that halts funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. That means withholding funds for projects like the I-10 expansion, investments in Sky Harbor and Mesa Gateway Airports and upgrades to our water infrastructure.

For all Trump's talk of manufacturing jobs, you didn't see the CEOs of GE and Caterpillar sitting in the prime seats today. You saw the CEOs of Amazon and X and Meta and Google and TikTok. It's the attentional oligarchs whose power he cares about.

Why fund highly novel research? It can improve the evolution of knowledge by guiding future researchers. We propose a model in which researchers decide which questions to address and at what intensity to search for the answer based on existing knowledge. econometricsociety.org/publications/e…

Depends some on how the government uses the tax revenues. Seems like a won for some, wash for others, and loss for yet others. Aggregating those meet benefits is pretty close to impossible.

Just to finish the thought, people assume congestion taxes are a mixed bag for drivers because even though they have to pay the tax, they save time because traffic goes down. But the net effect, roughly on average, has to be negative--the savings in time can't outweigh the tax…

Banger of an exchange.

he's right though - half the cases in our docket (on the committee) are for coffee shop meanness. Lot of the guilty end up losing their jobs and their fortunes (we do asset seizures as well)

The $50 billion algorithm, also known as TikTok US, will probably be banned in the United States on January 19th. People are downloading Rednote, a Chinese app, in anticipation of the ban. And this makes me think that the new Cold War (or whatever we are calling this) isn't US vs…

One big thing DEI sentiment shift is showing is how full of shit corporations are. If a few months ago DEI was “at the heart of company values” and “in your DNA” or whatever and now boom you’re ending these “harmful initiatives” etc, it’s all performative, pandering BS both ways.
