Yes!!! I have always felt that people who get so wrapped up in “real world” problems are missing the point when teaching young students! If we can engage our kids and instill in them a love for math, then we don’t need to try and persuade them that they will use this in 10 years!
Spent last 2 days doing tons of clever puzzly word problems w/grade 6-8 teachers. Working to develop proportional reasoning skills. Real world problems? Not necessary! People who insist on "real world" problems miss the point entirely. Puzzles, games, engaging activities are key!
Yes! This right here. We need to put more emphasis on teaching kids to be problem solvers and not trying to connect every skill to a real life scenario. Most 9 year olds aren’t interested in how they will use this in 10 years. They get excited when they can conquer problems now!
I love this! It troubles me so much that there is such an overemphasis on making math practical when we are talking about elementary school kids. I think kids like math when they get it – and not because of all the ways they are planning to use it in their personal life!
