My freshman noticed two ways to see this pattern growing, and both equations gave us 30,800 blocks in step 99. This was a great pattern to facilitate making viable arguments and using structure to solve problems.

Do you know a LGBTQ+ high school student with an interest in math? Send them this tweet ASAP so they can apply for our virtual "Camp” of Mathematical Queeries today. Applications are due tomorrow, and applying only takes 10 minutes. bit.ly/3olpHQV

Posed some questions about Cuisenaire rods today and some interesting discussions took place ☺️

One of the unintended outcomes of @pgliljedahl #thinkingclassroom is students suggesting how we could rearrange the classroom to better fit the activity. They went to work rearranging tables and it was cool to see them take ownership of the space & make it work for them 💛

I am so darn proud of my students today. They used @fawnpnguyen visual patterns to show similarities and differences between linear and quadratic relationships 🤯

From one of my juniors today: “I never expected a math final to be fun but I actually did so much thinking today” 🥹🥹🥹

Anyone have a good visual or animation for why factoring quadratics by grouping works? #MTBoS #math #mathed

I could have swore someone shared a self-checking #desmos activity for the 4 4’s task, but I’ve searched my bookmarks with no luck. Anyone have it accessible? #MTBoS #math

It’s a minimum day so I planned relaxation stations. My sophomores were so hooked on yesterdays problem they wanted to go to their whiteboards instead 🥲🥹

Bought new loafers I thought were really cute and my students were quick to roast me. “Ms. Carter why you in your church shoes?” 😂💀

I wish that walk throughs and observations were treated as collaboration. That it felt safe and a place to try new things and grow. Often it feels punitive and like a trap. I don’t want to pull out a special lesson I want helpful feedback on the everyday stuff

I've been a math educator since 2003 and Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by @pgliljedahl has more potential to improve the way we teach mathematics than any other book I have ever read. I wrote a blog post to share why we should all read it: robertkaplinsky.com/you-must-read-…

New Task: Factions Calculations - Working Backwards and Generalising This task gives plenty of practice calculating all four operations with fractions, with lots of patterns to spot and generalise algebraically. Really excited to give this one a go in September!

📢 Middle School Teachers: what are your cell phone procedures that are respectful to students, while keeping phone use at a minimum? Trying to find a balance…

I am itching to get back into the classroom but still have a month left of summer. Can’t tell if I should ride the wave of motivation or force myself to enjoy my last bit of freedom.

Do you teach students about patterns or functions? If so, you'll love the 400+ patterns on visualpatterns.org from @fawnpnguyen. Enjoy! #iteachmath #MTBoS

Or, shouldn't there be a product that realistically is doable in 180 days of 45 to 55-min class periods? (We all know we don't have all 180 either.) And I'm that T who will leave math edu entirely if I can't add problem solving, visual patterns, & number talks to the curriculum.

How @officialSCUSD has handled this strike will be studied in education leadership courses throughout the country as a textbook example of how NOT to handle labor relations. See you Monday on the picket line, @SacTeachers colleagues!
