Another name for Down Syndrome is Trisomy 21, or in other words, an extra chromosome 21. It is not inherited or affected by the parent’s genetics. The extra chromosome is a random event caused during the formation of reproductive cells in the parent.

Kyle reposted

Down Syndrome is neither dominant nor recessive, due to the fact that it is not passed down by the parents, but is caused by a random error in reproduction. Those afflicted, can also experience some accelerated symptoms from other diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

In order to know if a future child will be afflicted, there are two possible tests: Prenatal Screenings, and Diagnostic tests available in the second Trimester

Kyle reposted

Prenatal Screenings performed before birth alert the parents to the chance that their child will have Down Syndrome, while Diagnostic Tests will let the parents know if the child will have Down Syndrome or not.

Kyle reposted

There are no treatments specifically for down syndrome itself, nor cures, but there are therapy programs available. Some examples of these include Speech-language, Physical, Emotional/Behavioral, and Occupational therapy.

There are government programs and resources available for those afflicted. Such as: National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), Association for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS), and National Association for Down Syndrome (NADS) care.com/c/stories/6643…

Hopefully, in the future, we have potential drugs to boost the chemical norepinephrine in the brain alleviating the cognitive problems.

Pictured is the karyotype for an individual with Down Syndrome. It is often referred to as trisomy 21 due to the additional chromosome 21.
