The critique is valid in modern comics, but it's not exclusive. Half of the mainstream indies is "how do I get a show?". A lot of creators are guilty of it. I get its more profitable to do TV and movies, but I wish if you made something it was made FOR that artform.
as for "artists are using comics as storyboards for adaptations": only Kirkman does that and he's not even an artist I don't like Kirkman
