Falconer, single-minded, wants to set a dangerous precedent and end the Lords as we know it: line-by-line scrutiny curtailed, peers denied the chance to speak, 90% of amendments ignored. If peers accept this for a Bill ending people's lives, what Bill could it not apply to? 1/

Falconer wants peers to curtail debate on Starmer's Bill and limit their concerns to just 10 issues. IF they agree to his timetable, he's offered to say what he is willing to do on those issues. He isn't offering a compromise nor proactivity - all the movement is on one side 1/

Confirmed—and in the most forceful language I have ever seen the APM use on this subject. “Lord Falconer cited, and misrepresented, expert evidence presented…by the Association for Palliative Medicine.”

The @APMPostTweets has issued a statement on a misrepresentation by Lord Falconer last Friday with regard to the safeguard of panels in assisted dying.

Something very odd is happening behind the scenes on Kim Leadbeater’s Assisted Dying Bill. Multiple sources say Falconer is talking up with Govt bypassing the House of Lords entirely using the Parliament Acts — and has been planning this since the summer 1/

And he declined to tell voters - or even his own MPs - that this would be amongst his policies if elected. Which religious and ethnic communities in particular were deliberately deceived by that? What do their MPs feel now?

The fundamental problem is there have been several moments Kim Leadbeater hasn’t seemed to be across the detail of her own bill. And the reason for that is it’s not really her bill. It’s Keir Starmer’s bill.

God above

💉Having said two weeks ago that he’s happy for poor people to die under his Bill, Lord Falconer today says he’s happy for 18-year-olds to die by assisted suicide, even though he admits here that they are “more emotionally impulsive" & "easily influenced”. Disturbing.

"Undemocratic" ... from a group that connived to conceal a flagship policy from the electorate then tried to game parliamentary procedure to hurry it through into law.

This "safer" bill allows for-profit companies to operate this suicide service, something a gov minister, @SKinnock, has confirmed he is comfortable with. That is, as far as I know, unprecedented throughout the world. #assistedsuicide

Assisted dying bill is safer than any other in the world: “I am sure there are many peers who want to scrutinise the bill in a sensible way, but they are being thwarted by a handful who seem intent on stopping law change at any cost.” Dr Jacky Davis theguardian.com/society/2025/d…

So far Starmer’s assisted suicide bill has circumvented: —The electorate (nothing in manifesto) —Ministers (banned from speaking) —Experts (excluded by Commons committee) —MPs (urged to vote yes so Lords could fix it) —Now Lords (told they are filibustering if they scrutinise)?

EXC - I've seen a leaked policy document from Labour in opposition which sets out how to approach assisted dying. The document sets out how it could be introduced as a private member’s bill, suggesting that would still allow “heavy influence” for the government in the process

🔥LORD FALCONER ADMITS ASSISTED SUICIDE SAFEGUARDS COULD BE WATERED DOWN IN FUTURE! In a big moment, Lord Falconer admits to Baroness @Fox_Claire that he can’t guarantee under-18s won’t one day be eligible for assisted suicide (as is the case elsewhere) if his Bill passes.

This should anger all MPs and Peers, especially those who have supported the bill so far. The government have abused the private members bill process, actively preventing proper scrutiny…and have been found out. Peers will have even greater justification now to vote it down.

Full story here - The leak will raise fresh questions over how much government control there has been behind Leadbeater’s bill. theguardian.com/society/2025/d…

This Bill is not safe. It's Starmer's Bill and even he will not guarantee its safety, only that it will be 'workable', 'effective' and 'enforceable'.

Utterly chilling. Assisted Dying is a blueprint for euthanizing the unwanted and the vulnerable.

The Lords debate is helping us get closer and closer to the reality of how the Assisted Dying Bill will work. The logic of this new 'right' is compulsive... you'll be screened at A&E for the quick death pathway, and then assigned a 'navigator' to 'help' you along it.

I worked in Whitehall for 15yrs and saw many Bills where details were pored over and debated. This has not happened for the Assisted Dying Bill - the sponsors have avoided scrutiny. As a result, it is an absolute shambles, a disaster waiting to happen.

1. How do we know the AS bill came to the Lords in a totally inadequate state? As Lord Biggar points out in the Times, there’s a simple answer: “Hansard records that some MPs only waved it through on the assumption that the Lords would somehow rectify its myriad deficiencies.”

Brilliant brilliant thread explaining why the Assisted Dying Bill is in such a terrible mess. The tldr of which is: despite endless soundbites to the contrary, the sponsor just refused to listen. Ask @NazShahBfd @Rebecca_SPaul @sarahjolney1 or @danfrancis02 & @sojanuk

1. Why is Lord Falconer’s AS bill running into problems in the Lords? Many reasons, of course. But one underrated cause is what happened at committee stage in the Commons—and the choices made by the bill’s sponsor Kim Leadbeater.
