Help postdocs assess career choices: after gaining their degrees, many postdocs hit a crossroads. On #THECampus, @Nguyen_4science of @GeorgiaTech’s @C21U offers four key considerations (background, skills, values, interests) to help determine what’s next. bit.ly/40FyonL
The front page of tomorrow's @dailytarheel – I shed many tears while typing up these heart-wrenching text messages sent and received by UNC students yesterday. Our campus was on lockdown for more than three hours. Beyond proud of this cover and the team behind it.
Applying the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance to ecology & biodiversity research nature.com/articles/s4155… Jennings (@1NativeSoilNerd) et al outline how the principles can sow community ethics into disciplines inundated with extractive helicopter research practices
What makes some people better at trivia than others? in one of the most insane multi-year "research is mesearch" journeys ever, we (me + @_laurenwilkins_ + @mariam_s_aly ) ran a study to answer this very question! psyarxiv.com/fm82b/ check it out!! 1/ 🧵
I can’t describe how important it is to establish roles, responsibilities and a general ethos for research labs. Especially in academia where so many labs turn dysfunctional due to internal competition and lack of structure. elifesciences.org/articles/88853
It’s time to get to know our next #Filipina of the ‘Science-Corps Filipinas in STEM’ series- Faye Romero, PhD candidate in #Ecology and #EvolutionaryBiology at the University of Rochester, New York in Dr. Nancy Chen's lab (@popgenchen)!
I was told not to tweet this until the houses adjourned for fear of jinxing it, but the Minnesota legislature just completed what is probably the most productive session anywhere in the country since probably the New Deal. Sweeping bills and reforms across every area of life.
Dare to Lead by @BreneBrown left a profound impression on me when I read, “Leaders must either invest a reasonable amount of time attending to fears and feelings or squander an unreasonable amount of time trying to manage ineffective and unproductive behaviour.” #leadership
We’re out here & we do exist! I’m very happy in my role, finding that this work is meaningful, flexible, & impactful. I also have a wonderful community of colleagues who genuinely care about changing #HigherEd for good.
My @Science_Corps fellowship at the Central Visayan Institute Foundation in Bohol 🇵🇭 has been a life changing experience. It brings me great joy to share that together we are launching the Science-Corps #Filipinas in #STEM series on May 30!
💯 So many faculty KNOW that their colleagues have a pattern of poor mentorship (& worse) & yet still encourage grad students & postdocs to enter those labs. When those trainees leave, there’s no exit interview & it’s business as usual b/c y’all have known! #AcademicTwitter
Politeness culture in academia means that everyone will lament your departure after someone has treated you poorly enough that you leave, but no one will intervene in or even name the poor treatment for fear of making an abuser feel bad.
🚨 JUST OUT ➡️ The 2023 STAATUS Index Now in its third year, the STAATUS Index (Social Tracking of #AsianAmericans in the US) is the leading nationally representative survey of Americans' attitudes towards #AsianAmericans 🧵of some findings @taaforg #AAPIHeritageMonth #AAPIHM
Representation is a big issue in ecology & natural sciences (that separate humans from nature), but some sci fields like psychology have been thinking about "minority voices" for a while and using frameworks like participatory & collaborative research: apa.org/pubs/journals/…
HHMI is implementing a new salary scale for HHMI-employed postdoctoral researchers, effective April 9, 2023. (1/4) hhmi.news/3Uwl2am
Extremely proud to have worked on this project over many years, & with the privilege of collaborating with phenomenal researchers at the National Institute of Medical Research — Mwanza. Thank you to @ESA_org for recognizing our work! #diseaseecology #AcademicChatter
Today we announce the 2023 ESA award winners – a dedicated group of ecologists who have made outstanding & far-reaching contributions to our field 👏🏆🎉 Read the full announcement here: esa.org/blog/2023/04/1…
We conclude that there is strong evidence that authors from higher income and/or English-speaking countries receive significant benefits (large positive bias) to being identified to reviewers during peer review process
We are excited to share our new @NatureEcoEvo article! Using data from > 300,000 biological sciences manuscripts and policies for > 500 Ecology & Evolution journals, we found evidence for bias during peer review (a🧵) (nature.com/articles/s4155…)
Not going to RT this garbage to call direct attention towards me but PHEW. I love when people take your work completely out of context to make it fit their agenda that academia is becoming “too leftist” & “qualified candidates” can’t get jobs anymore. Lol #AcademicChatter
Berkeley just announced that it’s pursuing an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving destination because 40% of students are AAPI. Given that 0.0016% of students are Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander, the PI in AAPI is doing a lot of work here.
