In December 2015 I went for a beer with two early career female researchers in a large U.K. city. Their love of academia was gone. Completely gone. The path was never ending and precarious. I think one of them recovered and is now a professor. But they were brutalised by it.
Struggling a lot with being almost 40 and my field expecting that I live like an unattached 25yo. Even two-year positions just look like a minimum 3k moving expense to be separated from my spouse of 11 years and my pets. Academia says: no spouse, no kids, no pets. No connections.
