Spent a couple hours this weekend writing a story for my daughter about a couple baby birds I saved. Used ChatGPT to illustrate. It's pretty great. But I'd argue there's room for improvement...
A powerful illustration of why cutting funds to top universities cripples America and makes everyone in this country (and around the world) worse off.
Imagine a world without MIT.
o3 is an amazing tool for prepping lecture slides Want some illustrative examples? - o3 has ideas Need a chart? -o3 can suggest 5 Maybe you, yourself need background reading -o3 has cites It's incredible + the ability to provide links eliminates hallucination concerns
So we’re cutting off imports, kneecapping scientific discovery, halting funding of green infrastructure, reducing the immigrant workforce, battering tourism, and undermining the US dollar. So happy we’re making America great again.
Now officially out in the latest issue of AJPS! Check out our piece on China's strategic use of import refusals. @_sungkim @grace_zng
Happy Donald Rumsfeld IRS letter day to all who celebrate 💸
This is horrific. This individual was deported by mistake. The Supreme Court unanimously ruled the administration must facilitate his return yet they won’t do it. This truly shocks the conscience. Republican or Democrat we should all be appalled.
So when is Jamie Dimon next scheduled to appear on Fox Business? I'm kind of ready for this to be over.
Gulp. Me: How much would a $100 pair of sneakers made in China or Vietnam cost if made in the U.S.? @FDRA’s Matt Priest: “$300 or $400 easily. In fact, we've even just looked at the tariffs coming into place tonight at midnight, a $150 pair of running shoes will be $230.”
If the S&P 500 closes tomorrow where futures are right now, it will be the biggest three-day selloff in 38 years, a faster drop than any during either the global financial crisis in 2008 or the Covid-19 panic in March 2020.
NEW 🧵 A quick thread of charts showing how Trump’s economic agenda is going so far: 1) Trump has had the same impact on economic uncertainty as a global pandemic.
Look, if there’s one thing I learned from Biden’s presidency it’s that Americans actually want higher prices.
Luckily Smoot-Hawley didn’t have any negative economic consequences
A couple of folks have crunched the numbers (Evercore ISI - their chart, below; @fcastofthemonth) and concluded that the U.S. weighted average tariff, with all Trump's new orders in effect, will be higher than under Smoot-Hawley.
On the plus side, a global recession could help reduce CO2 emissions.
Twice this week I’ve read econ papers that had the same findings as prior polisci publications yet failed to cite that work. One used the exact same data. If you’re an economist writing on polisci topics, maybe read the literature before claiming no one has looked at this?
Always good to see that we continue to have serious people running our military ops.
"The attack on Columbia is a radical threat to scholarly excellence and to America’s leadership in research. Universities and their leaders should speak up and litigate forcefully to protect their rights." — President Eisgruber writes in @theatlantic. bit.ly/4iDZ2Fx

The Cost of the Government’s Attack on Columbia
American universities have given the country prosperity and security. The Trump administration’s attack on academic freedom endangers all of that.
