Do they have “math anxiety” or did we not teach them math?

The reason why you find it hard to stick with your training isn't because you're lazy. It's because you haven't built a habit. The whole point of a habit is to reduce the amount of discipline/motivation that's needed to stick with training. If you only have enough…

Math is a skill— like music or sports. Yet somehow, it's treated it differently. We’d never accept anti-practice attitudes in other domains, so why do we tolerate it in math? Here's @AlexKontorovich talking about this in my latest podcast episode. Link to full episode below.

If your kid doesn't know their math facts COLD, they can't do upper division math Learning math facts ages 10+ is possible but kids' brains are more receptive when less than 8 (yes, really) I know you don't want to... but your kid NEEDS you to help them learn math facts♥️

Important for Kindergarten --> Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize the number of items in a small set without counting. It's like quickly knowing how many dots are on a die without counting them individually.

Yes, we’re coming for math. It needs to be fixed.

Now that the evidence-supported ed community has spurred legislation to do a field-wide re-training in literacy instruction, I can't help thinking that we'll see similar mandates on the math side in the near future. @rastokke @rickhess99 @tomloveless99

This week, a math professor at MIT told me that incoming students are, on average, noticeably worse at math than they used to be. Harvard, of course, just added a remedial math class, Math MA5, "aimed at rectifying a lack of foundational algebra skills among students".

There are a lot of middle school students wasting their time in Math class because no one is brave enough to say that the complete absence of math fact mastery is crippling them every day. They could probably learn them in a week if we really cared.

5th grade teacher wanted ideas for math accommodations for a dyslexic student. After some questions I realized he can’t do long division because he can’t do add/multiplication. He is completely wasting his time in 5th grade math class!
