1️⃣ This pair of paragraphs arrived in an e-mail yesterday, sent by @UNDP’s @WeDontHaveTime campaign. I appeal to them again: What do they think they are accomplishing with such poor attempts at communication? Besides the tortuous English, and the misinterpretation of data, …
Bold move: Ford gives its dealer network 6 weeks to decide if they want to sell EVs or not, and if they do, they need to accept no-haggle set pricing and invest big $$ for charging infrastructure. #FordModele bit.ly/3BEGIZY
We want solar panels on every roof, starting with poorest areas of the poorest towns and cities. Clean, renewable, free energy is POSSIBLE; the only reason we don't have it is big businesses & corrupt govts ARE LINING THEIR POCKETS AND LAUGHING AT US. #GeneralStrikeNow
I think we have a new solar record in #ERCOT both for MW produced (8933MW at noon) and per cent of demand met = 23%! Wind meeting another 30% of demand for a renewable total of 53% at noon. Pretty sure solar has never been as high as 23% here. #txlege #txenergy #energytwitter
Make sure you've watched our new episode by tonight! @jonstewart is going live on Twitter Spaces at 9pm EST with @dwallacewells, @jessejenkins, @heathermcteer, @katherinehdixon, and more! theproblem.link/ClimateEpisode
So if you're financially well off enough to get an EV, you should. It helps create demand (and popular support) necessary to eventually drive down prices. /end
The same can happen with EV's. Folks looking at current EV's ($40/bulb) now saying it's too expensive, it'll never work, and it seems complicated (watt miles? J1772?). Not everyone can afford an EV, like those early day LED's, but soon: $1/bulb. We needed early adopters + law 4/5
In '07, the Energy Independence and Security Act set a new efficiency standard that essentially only CFL/LED's would achieve. Some folks complained LED's were inferior to incandescent (at the time, they were right), but the US effectively banned bad bulbs and market responded. 2/
I still vividly recall the first LED "bulb" I held at a GreenFest in DC in '04. The LED was hand crafted, cost $40. "This will never work," I thought. Too expensive, looked like a fire hazard, seemed complicated. Now you can get LED's at Costco for $1. What happend? 1/5
All of which is to say: the best way to protect US economy from oil price shocks is to accelerate efficient and electric vehicle adoption ASAP!
We are (for now?) well below record gas prices accounting for inflation. Plus US vehicle fleet much more efficient than 2008. We now have viable mass market EV alternatives & can you buy a mid-size SUV (eg RAV4 or Escape hybrid) that gets comparable gas mileage to a 2008 Prius!
To all the journalists reporting that gas prices are hitting a "record:" you have to adjust for inflation, for Pete's sake! In the 2008 runup, gas prices went well over $5 a gallon in 2022 dollars. Claiming we have just hit the highest-ever prices is misinformation.
I've now been asked to review yet again a paper in its 2nd revision (so this will be my 3rd time reading it) submitted to a well-known energy journal. On both previous occasions I (and the other reviewer) recommended "major revision". Can one say, three times and you're out?
Driving an EV is now about 5 times cheaper per mile than driving a gasoline car.
As we wait for @POTUS to begin #SOTU, we know he'll frame an energy agenda to spur clean energy manufacturing, lower energy costs for consumers & businesses, and create good jobs whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/… Analysis from REPEATProject.org speaks to each of these opportunities⤵️
NEW TODAY: REPEATProject.org report offers most comprehensive analysis yet of impacts of congressional budget & infrastructure bills, detailing impacts on CO2, investment, household energy costs, energy related jobs, public health, and more: repeatproject.org/docs/REPEAT_Su…
2. Clean energy manufacturing: if Congress enacts a package of energy investments like those in the Build Back Better Act, REPEATProject.org analysis estimates ~1 million additional manufacturing jobs in energy sectors, primarily producing wind & solar PV components. #SOTU
3. Lower energy costs: REPEATProject.org estimates Congressional support for clean energy, EVs, heat pumps & more can lower annual US energy expenditures by 6.6% in 2030 vs current law, an annual savings of $67 billion for American households, businesses & industry. #SOTU
3b. Lower energy costs: REPEATProject.org analysis also estimates that the average U.S. household would see energy costs decline by $300 per year by 2030, with savings seen across average households in all regions (from ~$100-500/household per year). #SOTU
4. Creating good jobs: REPEATProject.org estimates a package of investments in clean energy, EVs, heat pumps, and more in Build Back Better Act would drive a net growth of 2 million more jobs in 2030 than enactment of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (IIJA) alone #SOTU
5. Of course, much of this #SOTU will focus on how to combat & contain the threat posed by Russia to Ukraine, Europe & the world. Surging US clean energy production & lowering oil & gas consumption can free up more energy to export to our allies can help win on the energy front!
