The 3 manufactureres modem systems distinguished themselves from each other so much that we were shocked! We re‐ran the tests again & again.
In very short order, measured in days not weeks, we had everything we needed to run and publish our first “Consumer Reports” modem tests.
The entire system from Headend to subscriber was a single device under test being checked for all frames passing thru the subscriber modem.
There was a Headend modem from which Ethernet frames would be sent down the network to a subscriber modem which received the frames.
There was a short piece of coaxial cable which acted as—though grossly simplified—the Cable network that you would find in a neighborhood.
By May 1995, each cable modem system was configured and represented, albeit very simply, a tabletop version of a cable television network.
The theory behind the tests & explaining/defending the results was easy. Immediately, the thought of more complex tests captivated us.
Pressing just 1-button, the tester sent short, medium & long Ethernet frames, slowly then faster, then summarized offered vs. forwarded load
Typing RTBENCH at the DOS prompt, the tester would send traffic out one port and look to see if that traffic appeared on the second port.
Sales Rep Gary Archuletta understood the need and got me this critical test equipment right away, before a purchase order or any commitment!
The DA-30 tester instantly put multi-vendor cable modem testing on the map and radically changed the course of Cable's history.
The test was based on the Internet Engineering Task Force Benchmark Methodology Working Group, under leadership of Scott Bradner at Harvard.
