Driving home tonight, I thought about Republicans' floor speeches today on the "sanctity of life". And how this concern for "life" apparently doesn't extend to the kids who were shot today in a school in Michigan. So I turned the car around, and went to the Senate floor.

One year ago today, we lost the notorious Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a fierce advocate for women. Through all who she lifted up, her legacy and fearless spirit continue to live on.

Today, as I was sworn in, I held in my jacket pocket copies of the ships’ manifests recorded at Ellis Island when my Great Grandfather Israel arrived in 1911 and my Great Grandmother Annie arrived in 1913. A century later, their great grandson was elected to the U.S. Senate.
