Driving home tonight, I thought about Republicans' floor speeches today on the "sanctity of life". And how this concern for "life" apparently doesn't extend to the kids who were shot today in a school in Michigan. So I turned the car around, and went to the Senate floor.
One year ago today, we lost the notorious Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a fierce advocate for women. Through all who she lifted up, her legacy and fearless spirit continue to live on.
This #WomensHistoryMonth, we celebrate our achievements, but also work to eliminate the barriers to equality and inclusion that still exist. From the women's suffrage movement to the Equal Rights amendment and beyond, we have milestones to mark but many to go.
Today, as I was sworn in, I held in my jacket pocket copies of the ships’ manifests recorded at Ellis Island when my Great Grandfather Israel arrived in 1911 and my Great Grandmother Annie arrived in 1913. A century later, their great grandson was elected to the U.S. Senate.
