Me: I don't even get that excited talking about carnivorous plants Me talking about carnivorous plants:
So stoked to see this charming little plant win this year’s fave plant vote. At a time when our environment is facing huge challenges, it’s great to see a little plant that champions healthy ecosystems get a win. rnz.co.nz/news/national/…
When we talk about what predator free might look like Aotearoa NZ. For me I can’t wait to peak into every rock crack or gap in a retaining wall, and have cute little faces like these kōrero geckos looking back.
This is exactly how I feel about wildlife. What’s the name of that random beetle in Fiordland, how many individual of x species are there, what is the snout to vent measurement of that lizard, easy. What’s the name of the person who just introduced themselves, nope.
I will forget people's names multiple times but tell me that greyhounds cost $350 to adopt in 2018 or that the average age of a vehicle in NZ is 14.1 years and that number will never leave my brain
It’s kakaruai angrily call at each other time of year.
One of the best things I’ve ever seen. A crack between boulders filled to the brim with kōrero geckos on the Otago peninsula. Enjoying the warmth of the sun from the safety of their hideaway.
Come and work with me, and some of the coolest wildlife and people around.

Signs of spring! Check out this beautiful kahukura/red admiral feeding on the early blooms of orihou(Pseudopanax colensoi)
Nothing better than messily tucking into kōwhai flowers on a Saturday afternoon. Lots of action like this in the Botanic Garden today.
Multi story moko/lizard apartment. A timelapse of a green skink and a tussock skink enjoying the sun at Orokonui. Incredible to see multiple species of our native lizards hanging out together.
Maybe some signs of spring? These are the flowers of tarata (Pittosporum eugenioides). Some might be familiar with the strong lemon scent released when the leaves are crushed. But the flowers also release a similar scent attracting an array of pollinators to its flowers.
Did you know there are scorpions in Aotearoa/NZ. Well sort of, I saw this tiny pseudoscorpion cruising the dunes last night at a local beach. Don’t fear though, not only are they harmless, they are also minuscule. Wait till the end for finger comparison.
A Southern grass skink emerges from its burrow to bask in the late winter sun. This is sped up 600x and trimmed a little so it looks almost a bit like stop motion at times.
Fantastic news! It is more important than ever that we are all responsible pet owners, to look after these precious kiwi taonga. 🐕 Please keep dogs on a lead in all sign posted areas 🏡 Make sure your dogs are contained at night 🤳 Report any missing or roaming dogs immediately
Fantastic news! Our Kiwi are thriving in the Mākara hills, thanks to the incredible mahi of The Capital Kiwi Project and an amazing community of supporters! 💛 With 63 Kiwi roaming freely and pairing up, these birds are putting on weight which is a fantastic outcome.
One of the gnarliest birds in the sky. Pāngurunguru the Northern giant petrel. With wingspans up to 2.1m and weights up to 5kg these birds are HUGE. And this is the smaller of the two species! I love these birds but am glad I am not a baby penguin when I see them cruising.
It was also a lot of fun because I don’t know many seabirds. So someone would go “quick look and Antarctic fulmar” and even though I have no idea what that is I’m like awesome great to see!
A week or so ago I did my first pelagic cruise to look for seabirds. I have to say, birders might be on to something. We saw 6 species of albatross out there, the highlight for me was getting up close to these Southern royal albatross one of the biggest flying birds in the world.

A fly gets precariously close to the sticky leaves of the carnivorous plant Drosera arcturi. All while feeding on the flower of another carnivorous plant Utricularia dichotoma. Amazing drama to be seen when you get close to the ground in alpine wetlands.
There are so many reasons to love takahē. The fact that from certain angles they are perfectly spherical is one of them.
