My latest in @nytimes about the likelihood of multiple new wars breaking out across the Horn of Africa at the same time that the Trump Administration is dismantling America's expertise and institutions that have enabled its previous peacemaking there.@csis nytimes.com/2025/05/09/opi…

I think we are all waiting to see how Trump is personally involved in Sudan. The message that he isn’t sending deputies out to speak for him suggests that Boulos’ recent efforts in UAE were perhaps unsanctioned.

🔴وزير الخارجية ماركو روبيو يقول ان ترامب يهتم بقضية السودان شخصيا" ولا يرسل مندوبين لفعل هذا…لأنه القائد الوحيد في العالم القادر على انهاء الحرب

"At the G20, the world behaved as if the US were no longer the axis around which global decision-making must revolve. The machinery of global governance creaked forward, and the absence of the US didn’t stop it. It didn’t even slow it down." dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025-1…

"Sudan's Burhan rejects any peace plan that leaves RSF intact." This doesn't strike me as the maximalist position it has been made out to be. I honestly cant conceive of a future for Sudan where the RSF survives or remains intact. 2 armies under 1 roof=war sudantribune.com/article/307664

War Over Compromise: Burhan’s Ever-Hardening Stance In Sudan. Until the international community creates a cost for choosing war over peace, the war camp is always going to win out. eurasiareview.com/01122025-war-o…

No question that RSF has the momentum now, but will it be enough to take all of Kordofan and fundamentally alter the course of the war. December will be an important month. reuters.com/world/africa/s…

20+ Sudanese children, aged 14-15, were abducted for recruitment by RSF and SPLM-N allies in South Kordofan raid this week. Curious why child soldier sanctions are not even being applied to RSF. middleeasteye.net/news/sudanese-…

“The fall of El Fasher has spooked some of the regional powers on the sidelines who were not fully invested.” Some thoughts from me on how the war's backers are getting more involved since the fall of El Fasher, undermining US calls for peace. ft.com/content/ea22dd…

.@WSJ sourcing SAF officials on this perennial story that Army is offering Russia a Red Sea naval base in exchange for Russian fighter jets. If true, this would likely signal the SAF's definitive break with any Western peacemaking process. No going back. wsj.com/world/africa/s…

The story that just wont die: Sudan and Russia are negotiating a deal for the procurement of Su-30 and Su-35 fighter aircraft in exchange for naval base rights on the Red Sea. africa.businessinsider.com/local/lifestyl…

Its not clear how Lamamra's promotion of an internal Sudanese dialogue can coordinate or should be sequenced with a Quad process that calls for a civilian transition. We are realistically nowhere near either of those, but sometime soon they must sync up. sudantribune.com/article/307642

"Sudan is not “sliding” into famine; large parts of its population are being pushed there." forbes.com/sites/andyjsem…

This argument suggests that Saudi will only invest its promised $1 trillion in the US economy if Trump adequately responds to their demands to end the war in Sudan. And that this would limit China's influence as Saudi as well. Pure power politics. foxnews.com/opinion/trump-…

Interesting look at the strategic opportunity Iran sees in the Sahel and Horn regions. en.isna.ir/news/140409090…

“Sudan’s stability is a prerequisite for the stability of the region.” One of the smarter things I have heard Isaias say; if only other regional leaders felt the same way. middleeastmonitor.com/20251130-sudan…

Its hard to believe much of what AAH says anymore, but even if this is reasonably accurate it needs to be condemned. sudantribune.com/article/307621

Why we need to change the conversation on Sudan. Very thoughtful examination of how elite political discussions in Sudan remain disconnected from the difficulties of daily life for the majority of Sudanes. middleeasteye.net/opinion/why-we…

A good look at the disposition of forces in and around the Kordofans for the fight that is to come there. 3ayin.com/en/kordofan-14…

Exclusive: The first proof of the use of chemical weapons in Sudan’s civil war. There's no excuse for the use of even chlorine in war. It should be condemned, but it also should not take a year to come to light if we hope to dissuade its use. france24.com/en/tv-shows/th…

Donald Trump pledges to tackle Sudan atrocities - what difference can he make? Interesting article from Alex de Waal, that asks more questions than it answers. bbc.com/news/articles/…
