We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was: a man who believed that the Civil Rights Act that granted Black Americans the right to vote was a “mistake,” who after the violent attack on Paul Pelosi claimed that “some amazing patriot out there” should bail out his assailant, and…
Lots of people get mad when I won't reaffirm their racist, classist beliefs about presentation. When I won't say "pull up your pants" or "that person's bad because they won't wear a suit." I don't believe in dress codes. I also don't think classic suits are inherently superior…
South Korean workers who ICE recently detained at a Hyundai plant in Atlanta returned to their country. “Nobody is going to stay and work when it’s like this,” they said. America’s future is being destroyed by Trump’s reckless immigration policies
This is so gestapo “Thought police” dark. Revoking your passport for free speech criticism of US government is as fast a descent into dictatorship as it gets.
I hadn’t seen this. Kirk, the moderate free speech guy who did politics the right way per some liberals (!), called for Biden to be executed. Meanwhile Joe Biden put out a very strong statement condemning Kirk’s killing. Both sides! mediamatters.org/charlie-kirk/c…
So weird that Charlie Kirk was supposedly not a fascist, yet the fascists see him as a martyr. 🤔
🚨 JUST IN: Patriot Front marching through Huntington Beach, California chanting “Fight Back! Say His Name! Charlie Kirk
This is the most spot-on explanation of what's happened to disaffected Gen Z boys in America I've heard yet. There are a shitload of Tyler Robinsons in the US. Steve Bannon, Milo Yiannopoulos, Nick Fuentes and Charlie Kirk created a Frankenstein monster that's now out of control.
3 months ago, today, Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered by a Trump supporter. They had kids, too.
I disagree that Obama wore "slick suits." Let me tell you about Obama's tailoring. 🧵
Megyn Kelly: “We haven't felt like ourselves since Obama. He was such a slick snake…He was so divisive in his messaging...He’s the one who started to inject race when no one had been doing it… Obama is the reason Trump came about. They say ‘Trump is divisive’. He’s the…
After bouncing around for a while, the company was eventually purchased by Authentic Brands Group, who now also owns Brooks Brothers (oh how the streams merge). And a few years ago, Hart Schaffner Marx shuttered their Des Plaines factory, one of the last suit factories in the US
For the time he was President, I would not call Obama's suits "slick." They were made from basic worsteds, cut and sewn by a Chicago factory that struggled to keep its doors open. The business struggled for years, eventually declaring bankruptcy in 2009.
If you shop vintage, peer around the in-breast pocket. If you see this label, it was made by workers organized by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. Unfortunately, the union eventually declined and merged with other organizations in the post-war period.
However, the workers eventually won, and their victory led to the formation of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, a progressive labor union that broke away from the more conservative United Garment Workers union (UGW). ACWA pursued what's known as "social unionism."
Hart Schaffner Marx was also an integral to the US labor movement. In 1910, Chicago garment workers led by women bridged ethnic divisions and came together to demand better pay and work conditions. At the strike's its peak, 41,000 workers withheld their labor. Five were shot.
They also made military uniforms for US Army during both World Wars, which tied them to the idea of "national service" and American identity. American vets who returned from the trenches of Europe, but were not elite WASPs, bought HSM suits instead of the pricier Brooks Brothers.
As the Senator from Illinois, Obama likely choose Hart Schaffner Marx because they were founded in 1872 Chicago. In the late 19th century, they were one of the pioneers of ready-to-wear tailoring, making professional dress accessible to America's growing middle class.
This differs from his infamous tan suit. For all the controversy this outfit stirred, few people pointed out that it kind of looks frumpy. It's certainly better than the shrunken silhouettes you see on some men today, but it's not particularly impressive.
However, Obama's tailoring was notable in another, more important way: he was a strong champion of American tailoring. For both of his inaugurations, he wore suits from Hart Schaffner Marx. Topcoat and accessories were from Brooks Brothers. All made in the USA.
