Random guy: I’m frustrated because my family can’t afford a home. Same random guy: I can’t stand developers who build homes, and development should be as hard for them as possible!
Who cares! We have a huge housing shortage issue in America, and the implications are massive. Ugly. Not ugly. Just build them, and fast.
70% of Stockholm households do not own cars. And it's not because they can't afford cars.
More wide sidewalks please
SB 79, our bill to legalize townhomes and midrise apartments near the highest-quality transit, is up for its final vote in the Senate TODAY. Calling your state Senator and asking them to support the bill will make a real difference. It only takes a minute with our tool.
Cities need mixed levels of density
When we impose “order” on something complex, it’s reductionist—because we are simplifying what we don’t fully understand. We’ve done this with our cities. We’ve taken an industrial approach to a complex ecosystem—trying to make it more like an assembly line than a rainforest.
Small spaces can bring about a whole lot of life if only they’re allowed
Sidewalks don’t have to be tiny and sad: They can be spacious and beautiful:
My home: -Sprung forth organically from the earth itself -Just affordable enough but not *too* affordable -Only inhabited by deserving families forever Your home: -Ugly giveaway to developers -Overpriced luxury slum -Only for *those* transplants ruining the neighborhood
The group that votes most reliably, those over 65, have given themselves: - UBI (SSI) - Universal healthcare (Medicare) and - Rent control/Prop 13 There’s a lesson in there about voting and making the govt work for you.
The US tax system today is socialism for the old and rugged individualism for the young
If you block It will get housing here built here
It should be legal in every neighborhood to have a “third place” that you can walk to.
Goldman's latest (still very early) analysis of tariff effects thru June 2025: -Foreign exporters absorbed 14% of US tariffs -US companies ate 64% -US consumers ate 22% -Protected US companies also raised prices -Consumers will see bigger price increases (70%) thru the Fall
People understand the concept of leasing a car, buying car, buy new, buy used. Wealthy car owners upgrading to a new luxury car and selling their used one at a steep discount, making a 20 year old BMW affordable to the masses. Why are we so brain dead when it comes to housing?
The empirical evidence is clear and overwhelming: new market rate housing reduces rents *at the bottom of the market,* making housing more affordable for those who struggle the most.
lady cutting my hair today moved to austin in the 80s and downsized to an apartment when her kids were grown. said this year her landlord dropped her rent by $400 a month since all the new buildings nearby are offering incentives and she’s willing to move for a better deal
Our plan to build a townhome project under SB 1123 on a single-family lot we’re buying just hit an unexpected roadblock. The heir selling the house is overwhelmed & doesn’t want to dig up five years of documents to prove her family member lived there before he passed. We need…
Rule 55: Understand Bike Network Function Many cities wrongly try to help cyclists by adding bike lanes to every street. Great bike networks focus on fewer, low-stress routes by connecting routes using safe, available space. Walkable City Rules amazon.com/Walkable-City-…
Rule 53: Understand That Cycling Follows Investment Hilly San Francisco bikes 2x more than flat Denver. In Portland (~150 rainy days/year), biking to work is 14x the national average. Terrain and weather aren’t barriers—investment is. Walkable City Rules amazon.com/Walkable-City-…
I think it is bad that enormous McMansions for rich people are allowed by-right on pretty much all the residential land in America, but you have to get special permission and jump through a bunch of hoops to build modest apartments for middle class people in urban neighborhoods.
