1/ A thread about the class dynamics of air-conditioning in Europe. I believe attitudes toward air-conditioning are class markers in many European countries. Air-conditioning is seen as prototypically American, and that's important.

how to make your app fast and scalable with any database: 1. move 👏 the 👏 server 👏 closer 👏 to 👏 the 👏 database the edge is the worst place to talk to the database directly. latency is king. even if a query takes <10ms round-trip to the database, having 100 queries per…

This is such a fascinating graph. A frequency drop of 0.15Hz was enough to take down Spain and Portugal.

This is interesting as a first large diffusion-based LLM. Most of the LLMs you've been seeing are ~clones as far as the core modeling approach goes. They're all trained "autoregressively", i.e. predicting tokens from left to right. Diffusion is different - it doesn't go left to…

We are excited to introduce Mercury, the first commercial-grade diffusion large language model (dLLM)! dLLMs push the frontier of intelligence and speed with parallel, coarse-to-fine text generation.

That's so true, Zeno. I call it the Stinky Room Theory because it is similar to how we only notice bad odors in our house when returning from outside 😅 “The more you interact with the system the more biased you become”

I quite like the idea using games to evaluate LLMs against each other, instead of fixed evals. Playing against another intelligent entity self-balances and adapts difficulty, so each eval (/environment) is leveraged a lot more. There's some early attempts around. Exciting area.

Perfect timing, we are just about to publish TextArena. A collection of 57 text-based games (30 in the first release) including single-player, two-player and multi-player games. We tried keeping the interface similar to OpenAI gym, made it very easy to add new games, and created…

If you want to see if a Chinese LLM is censored you just ask it about Tiananmen Square. What’s the equivalent for an American LLM?

Right now, Chinese LLMs are much less censored than American LLMs. Will that change?
