Haven't posted here in a few years. But since Senator Kennedy quoted a post from this account today at a Senate hearing on pregnancy behind bars at which I testified, I thought it would be a good time to share. See the recording of the hearing here: c-span.org/video/?537460-…

Having deep appreciation for @RepPressley's attention to the health and wellbeing of incarcerated mothers. We've come a long way, but have so much more work to do. @cbsufrin @LGoshin @mjzielinski_phd @prisondoulas @PrisonBirth @momsbeyondbars @IBJPrisonDoulas

We have an incarceration crisis in this country & women make up one of its fastest growing populations - yet one of the most overlooked. Today, I’m introducing the Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act to to support the growing number of incarcerated moms. #Momnibus #SaveMoms

Women in jail are the fastest-growing correctional population in the country, increasing 14-fold between 1970 and 2014. Our Overlooked report spotlights the growing issue of incarcerated women in jails—a majority of whom are mothers & women of color. bit.ly/2qITPYf

At the center of June Medical Services v. Russo is a harmful & punitive law requiring providers to "jump through the medically unnecessary—and, for some, impossible—hoop of securing admitting privileges at a hospital near their clinic." gu.tt/3anZrZl #MyRightMyDecision

The problem with race-based medicine

Social justice advocate and law scholar Dorothy Roberts has a precise and powerful message: Race-based medicine is bad medicine. Even today, many doctors still use race as a medical shortcut; they...

Check out this deep dive, honest, disturbing report on the treatment of incarcerated women in our country, from the US Commission on Civil Rights. Appreciate our non-partisan government institutions that pay attention to those who are overlooked. @USCCRgov

Carolyn Sufrin @cbsufrin: “Women who don’t count don’t get counted... the lack of any comprehensive or updated statistics about pregnancy among women behind bars signals the systematic disregard in the carceral system, and indeed our country, for incarcerated pregnant people.”

I learned so much from @MotherJustice and @Reprorightsdoc in co-writing this piece in @AMJPublicHealth latest issue. Understanding mass incarceration through the lens of repro justice tells us everything about the intersecting oppressions of carcerality and white supremacy.

Proud to have co-authored this piece with @MotherJustice and @cbsufrin in @AMJPublicHealth highlighting the ways that mass incarceration directly undermines the core values of #reproductivejustice and drive #reproductivehealth inequities ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.21…
