Last fall @rootsofprogress invited me to give a talk on what's wrong with the news and what we can do about it. Thanks so much to @jasoncrawford and the team for the opportunity!

Why is the news cynical, simplistic, certain, and scared? And how do we fix it? Freethink Media co-founder @ChandlerTuttle proposes a way forward at the @rootsofprogress conference. Timestamps: 0:00 - Modern media 1:00 - What’s wrong with the news? 2:29 - Fundamental questions…

I find the failure modes here fascinating because it highlights how these "alien intelligences" actually function. Their successes are all too close to our successes, but their failures are startlingly different, and that's what we ought to learn from.

I'm sorry but wtf is a "superintelligence"? Can we at least *define* something? Or maybe the act of defining is itself prohibited? What about the TikTok Intelligence? Can we get some clarity? How can there ever be broad scientific consensus on gobbledygook?

As i told you today - one of the best things I’ve ever seen - and hit even harder live in the room with so many amazing founders, leaders, and luminaries. Literal chills. Amazing, kudos.

Data center water use is almost entirely a non-issue. Arguments to the contrary generally rest on the fact that almost no one has any context for overall daily US water consumption (300+ billion gallons per day), so it’s easy to present a big-sounding number out of context.

This new article from the NYT is one of the most blatant misrepresentations of the AI water issue I've seen. A ton of pictures and close-ups of faucets run dry and people suffering from drought, with a subtitle saying "When Microsoft opened a data center in central Mexico last…

Yes it absolutely should. Building mogging should be a stated goal of every developer Each new construction should be grander and more audacious than the last

The proposed 175 Park Avenue skyscraper in Manhattan should not be allowed to mog the Chrysler building this bad

Some people think post-scarcity means that no labor will be required. This is wrong. Post-scarcity means nothing is scarce, that everyone has sufficiency to meet their desires. Including their desire for purposeful work. Not a world of endless leisure.

Had a mentor tell me once: "When you're feeling overwhelmed, there are only two things you should do... get organized and get to work. The rest is just noise. Peace is found in progress."

Enjoyed spending time with my friend @EricMarkowitz for The Long Game talking Buffett and Munger - the role they've served as teachers to the investment community, but also the broader lessons that we can all apply in our daily lives. Thank you Eric. bigthink.com/the-long-game/…

He's right. Except in a few edge cases, everything good (health, education, rule of law, tolerance) is downstream of economic growth.

Economic growth is literally everything. People fondly remember the times of high GDP growth and treat the ones with low growth as the dark ages. Growth means positive sum thinking becomes the optimal strategy and this is the bedrock of civic society. We must build more…

A spectacular example of Orwellian doublespeak from the UK Home Secretary: "Just because you have a freedom doesn’t mean you have to use it at every moment of every day." In fact the ability do something whenever you want is practically the definition of a freedom.

Fifty years ago, we were told that without draconian internationally imposed population control measures, like mandatory sterilization, mankind was doomed. This turned out to be profoundly stupid. The “logic” of Erlich's claims was supposedly impeccable. It was just simple…
