My partner pulled off the most wholesome, archaeologically adjacent, bamboozling act of kindness and I had to share it. 🧵 When I was in Rome this summer, somehow my trowel ended up in my carry-on. I was mortified when it was discovered in the TSA line, because I knew (1/?)

He was apoplectic about it--mentioning that the frogs had all gone, and many kinds of birds as well. They had had all kinds of experts and machines trying to figure out where the water had gone! This is an ecological disaster that should be fixed! Please retweet! (3/3)

But were horrified when we arrived to see that the riverbed was absolutely dry! We spoke to the site manager who told us that some private building site had disrupted the river, which no longer ran through the site! (2/3)

(Attention Athenian journalists!) For Mayday we went to the #Kerameikos site to see a bit of #UrbanNature among the ruins--usually there are tortoises, frogs, dragonflies, etc. near the reedy banks of the #Eridanos river, that briefly runs above ground here (1/3)...

The “new” route without a transfer, for my kid in Clifton gaslight to Walnut, includes 33 minutes of walking for 10 minutes in a bus. Not an improvement!

Attention, parents: New Metro route information is now available in Google Trip Planner (and soon Transit app!). Be sure to enter Aug. 19 as your trip date to view route information for your student's first day of school.

Archaeology at Sheffield is under attack. We've made an information pack explaining what is happening and how you can help (including a petition, who you can email and a template letter to use) at bit.ly/savesheff #SaveSheffieldArchaeology #ArchaeologistMadeInSheffield

This is TERRIBLE news. I learned environmental archaeology and zooarchaeology at Sheffield @sheffielduni @UniShefArch is one of the top archaeology departments in the UK & worldwide with top scholars, great students, and a vibrant environment Please do what you can to help! /1

Email forwarded to me, I suspect I will be seeing more of these. - 'University of Sheffield Archaeology Department are under current review over the future of their department. One of the options on the table for this is the complete closure of the department...'

Thread for some solutions. My grandmother used to read JAMA to my sight-impaired grandfather in the 1990s!
