“How do you rotate your goalies?” “They change on the fly” Here’s why, They are ready and engaged, no checking out or getting bored, and it’s fun. “What if you get scored on?” It’s 10u…we’ll be ok.

Wow! What a great game to work on moving the puck/ball quickly with intent. Lot’s of decisions on both the taggers/passers and the players on the outside!!! Think I have another game to add to our warmups tomorrow!!!

This is one of our goto hockey/pe warmups. We also play with teams and multiple balls.

IMO best way to work on breakouts. It’s not how to breakout….its making a play under pressure, scanning, receiving a pass w/pressure and making the next play. If you don’t have the puck, do you recognize chances to support the play, get open or communicate w/teammates.

Coaches — stop running 5-on-0 drills in your practices! Using 5-on-0 to walk through plays might feel productive, but it doesn’t develop the decision-making your players need. Instead, try live small-sided games like 5-on-4 or 4-on-3 with added constraints. These force players to…

Bumpers- 3v3 in the middle, must pass to the “bumper” behind the goal line or out high on a turnover. Created great opp to add incentives for high low, give and go, back door goals, rebounds.

How many times a game does a player struggle to pick the puck up off the wall under pressure? Starting with a wrap is an easy way to add it in to practice.

Great/good coaches design environments in which players “learn”. Yes we step in, provide feedback. And yes we need to be knowledgeable but it is what the “players” learn. Learning is “caught not taught”.

I luv this approach!!

Starting sag’s with a rush creates some game like situations for both teams. It creates opportunities for some quick teaching points of habits which are common mistakes in games.

This would be a much better investment than in paying a 3rd party skills instructor to run your kids through a bunch of blocked & isolated activities.

Unpopular opinion, but grassroots clubs should invest in a coach developer to co-coach and support coaches every week, rather than pay the crazy money for coaches' qualifications, and yes granted, some qualifications are mandatory, and I appreciate that. #TickBox

If you can’t make a connection to game performance….its probably wasting time.

Technical Skills The best way to identify poor technical skills is to train in context. 🫟 Technical deficiency becomes abundantly obvious to players and coaches alike. #TOVO

Teaching isolated technique is easier, looks good from the stands Teaching a technique in context is harder, looks messy, frustrates at times. Big toolbox, right skill, right time Does “technique” matter if they can never see the space, opportunity, or teammates to make plays

I have seen players drilled in technique never get it either or able to transfer it to the game! They succeed at 10 and then are out of the game early too because they are not successful at the older ages when decision making and compete become more important
