Sometimes, not all news is bad news. The dominance of conflict theory in contemporary sociology has created blind spots, especially the discipline’s limited attention to social progress and the conditions that foster it. 👇

Two things are true simultaneously: a) BBC staffers are frightened of external criticism from the right; b) BBC staffers are frightened of internal criticism from progressives. Both have chilling effects.

The BBC is biased. The BBC is much less biased than the overwhelming majority of media outlets. The BBC is much less biased than the overwhelming majority of people who complain about BBC bias on the left and right. The UK would be *much* worse if it didn't have the BBC.

Important article for many of us to read. “I thought this because I’m the sort of person who generally trusts what expert organizations, academics, professional journalists, and those in my social network (mostly, highly-educated progressives) say about things.”

There's highbrow misinformation, as @danwilliamsphil points out - and there's also highbrow ragebait. The Guardian publishes a lot of senseless outrage of this type.

Agree 💯

The BBC is a HUGE asset to the UK. Yes, it would benefit from more viewpoint diversity (like every other cultural institution) but I utterly disagree with those who wish to destroy it. Remember the words of the great Joni Mitchell: “You Don't Know What You Got Till It's Gone”

Unfortunately I think this is the mood affilitation that will continue to grow in various circles: socially conservative subcultures who reject change; activists who make activism their identity; degrowth-adjascent ideologies; aging populations who are unwilling to let societies…

I am worried that people converge to general "AI hating" instead of being against particular reasons (e.g. IP, xrisk, slop, competition, power concentration etc.) AI is not going to go away - it is too useful - so general rejection will not work other than as social posing.

Van Leeuwen's great book has generated a diverse body of critical commentary by philosophers, but none I'm aware of have critically engaged so richly with the anthropological data he marshals on behalf of the religious credence concept as this one -- highly recommend!

"seems to us that Van Leeuwen has taken the attenuated cognitive attitude that is typical of the average liberal Christian in the West, and projected it backward onto the history of religious traditions, as well as to non-western cultures across the globe" researchgate.net/publication/39…

Clickbait strategies backfire over time. Chasing quick clicks may build an audience, but clickbait erodes reputation in the long run. High-quality content may attract an audience more slowly, but it can outperform clickbait strategies over time. optimallyirrational.com/p/what-are-we-…
