On November 25, 1922, the student-run University of California Band marched onto the field for the first time at the 28th Big Game. The ASUC-sponsored band took over from the Cadet Band, founded in 1891, run by the military cadet corps/ROTC. Photos are from 1926 & 1928. @CalBand
Morning Cal fans. Wish Justin Wilcox the best. Five Big Game wins. Beat USC. Thor Bowl, Smoke Bowl, Cheez-it Bowl. Auburn, Louisville, Ole Miss. Endured Knowlton, COVID, UC bureaucracy. Did his best for a tough job. Time for something better. Thanks Coach. Go Bears Forever.
Cal is hosting a celebrity flag football game at CMS the week of the Super Bowl in February. Quavo and Dwight Howard will be two of the featured celebrities participating in the event.
I will be forever grateful for Coach Wilcox and the impact he had on me. He gave me an opportunity that changed my life and helped me become a better player and a better person. I’m truly thankful for everything he gave to us
We’ll honor all the Seniors v SMU - but this group has been with Cal since 2021. I can’t emphasize enough how much respect I have for these guys who have been loyal Cal Bears. Stanley McKenzie Akili Calhoun Jeffrey Johnson Trond Grizzell Derek Wilkins Bastian Swinney
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. There are only 3 non-Cal defensive backs in the ACC with more pass deflections than Derek Wilkins
Racism is expensive. Nazi Karen literally calling the police on the Boston Police Chief.
Happy Birthday and best wishes to sociologist Harry Edwards, Professor and Professor Emeritus since 1970. His work is devoted to how sports reflect larger cultural issues, particularly the experience of Black athletes. His seminal work is "The Revolt of the Black Athlete."
Here he is with Kevin Moen, the Cal player who knocked him over, at California Memorial Stadium. And the link to a nice article about the two of them and The Play: si.com/college/cal/ne…
His name is Gary Tyrrell. He's a great guy and, although a loyal Stanford man to his bones, he is beloved by Cal fans. I've known him several years and he's never said anything about hate mail. In fact, he literally never has to buy a beer in Berkeley as long as he lives.
Happy Big Game Eve, Cal fans! For your enjoyment this morning, we have the UC Men's Octet! They were kind enough to let me record a few songs to share with you today. You can hire them to sing at your event. Just send an email to [email protected]. They're AWESOME! GO BEARS!
The biggest Big Game upset of them all! As the 1986 Big Game approached, Stanford was ranked #16. Cal was 1-9 and Joe Kapp's firing as head coach had already been announced. The 21-point underdog Bears didn't have a prayer - or did they? calbearshistory.com/2021/11/18/198…
November 20, 1982 "The Play" Joe Starkey's memorable call of Cal's improbable, unforgettable five-lateral game-winning kickoff return touchdown against Stanford in their annual "Big Game". "THE BAND IS OUT ON THE FIELD!!!"
"Next lil bitch who asks me a dumbass question about Wilcox job security on Big Game Week is getting his teeth knocked out. Next question."
Cal General Manager Ron Rivera was asked about Justin Wilcox’s job status “Wow that’s a left field question. I’m here to talk about the Big Game so I’m not going to even address that.”
Hey, look! The 1920 Big Game program was shaped like a football!
Fans were encouraged to take trains, ferries and street cars to the 1920 Big Game. Even though old California Field only held 28,000 fans, access and parking for fans who drove "machines" to the game was pretty limited.
Andy Smith's "Wonder Team" finished the most spectacular regular season in Cal history with a huge win in the 1920 Big Game. How huge was it? For starters, the Bears out-gained Stanford 303-19. The story, full of info about the 1920 gameday experience: calbearshistory.com/2020/11/20/cal…
