(5) In the 1948 photo, the backwards SCOTT’S sign is for J & WR Scott’s grocery store (seen here in 1930). While it was demolished in 1931 for a road expansion, the grocers (est. 1875) re-opened on the opposite side of the drug store at 155 Dupont where Kitchen Table is today.
(4) The “DRUGS” sign on the S. W. includes a phone #: RA (Randolph) 4133: The city directories identify this as Hillview Pharmacy, seen here from a different street-view in the late 1930s.
(3) Here’s a view of the N.E. residential corner from street level in 1939. In 1955, these corner houses will be demolished to build a new space for Sign of the Steer steakhouse.
(2) This rail underpass was referred to as the Davenport subway, seen here in 1957 and 2020.
(1) Imperial Gasoline, in one form or another, has operated at this N.W. corner for 100 years (in 1926, it sold control to Standard Oil > S.O. > “Esso”). Atlas Tires (on the 1948 billboard) was an Esso product. View here is from 1938.
A lot has changed at Davenport & Dupont since this 1948 photo was taken, yet it still looks familiar. Here’s a short thread to explain the numbers I’ve added, using alternative views of this intersection from around the same era.
This bollard has skillz. #WorldBollardAssociation

#OTD in 1962, the Ontario Human Rights Code came into effect and established equal rights & freedom as primary elements of provincial law, with sexual orientation added to the Code in 1986. Sharing our stories is an important part of Ontario's heritage. bit.ly/OHT_OHRC
