So-called progressives are so obsessed with condemning dystopia that they devote almost no energy to articulating what Utopia should look like. Until they can provide a vision of the future that is worth fighting for, they’ll lose.
Slaves who escape slavery but become serfs remain unfree. Slaves and serfs who revolt, establish capitalism and there become wage-earning employees remain unfree. Freedom = workers own and operate their own workplaces democratically: worker co-ops.
Wealth and income inequalities depend on joblessness and its threat, as do racism, sexism, and ecologically destructive production. Guaranteed decent jobs for all (removing the fear of job loss) makes all these problems easier to solve.
Capitalism’s defenders face deepening skepticism. Still they repeat: “our” problem is not capitalism; its “government.” Sadly for them, everyone else knows capitalist interests own and run government for their profit.
