Children should be included, but not forced to attend the memorial, and funeral ceremonies. Including children in rituals can help them feel connected to their loved ones. They can express their emotions by writing letters or poems 📝, or drawing pictures 🎨 for the casket 💙

My 18 year old patient did everything to avoid the subject of her dying. Her signature line “I am not dying”. Everyone spoke of her denial yet before she died she wrote 18 birthday letters to her newborn son. Acceptance doesn’t look the same for everyone.

When we frame the discussion of cancer in terms of battles won and lost, we diminish those who died. Their malfunctioning cells couldn’t be controlled. Period, end of story. They died because dying is an inevitable part of life. Much as we hate to admit it, we are not in control.
Cancer isn’t cured by positive thinking or “beating it.” It’s about whether or not damaged, rouge cells can be controlled. While attitude may help us endure treatment, it doesn’t determine outcomes. I’ve lost friends who were warriors and did everything “right.” They didn’t lose.
Their Mom had just passed. The love palpable. I showed them my necklace. My father’s thumbprint. I touch it often throughout the day. They all smiled when they looked at her hand. It was in a fist….except one beautiful outstretched finger. #MedTwitter #fridaymorning #Meded
