It's no secret that the outdated nature of the #funeralindustry has made it easy for ambitious entrepreneurs to bring modern, tech-forward solutions to funeral services. Thank you to the @nytimes for shining a light on the future of funeral services. nytimes.com/2022/02/03/bus…

My 18 year old patient did everything to avoid the subject of her dying. Her signature line “I am not dying”. Everyone spoke of her denial yet before she died she wrote 18 birthday letters to her newborn son. Acceptance doesn’t look the same for everyone.

Tragically, we've all become numb to Covid's death toll. Sometimes it takes a tangible comparison to shake us out of complacency. I had such a moment today, when Covid deaths in the U.S. hit 875,000. That, as it happens, is the population of my city, San Francisco. Staggering.

When we frame the discussion of cancer in terms of battles won and lost, we diminish those who died. Their malfunctioning cells couldn’t be controlled. Period, end of story. They died because dying is an inevitable part of life. Much as we hate to admit it, we are not in control.

Cancer isn’t cured by positive thinking or “beating it.” It’s about whether or not damaged, rouge cells can be controlled. While attitude may help us endure treatment, it doesn’t determine outcomes. I’ve lost friends who were warriors and did everything “right.” They didn’t lose.

Their Mom had just passed. The love palpable. I showed them my necklace. My father’s thumbprint. I touch it often throughout the day. They all smiled when they looked at her hand. It was in a fist….except one beautiful outstretched finger. #MedTwitter #fridaymorning #Meded
