On Govt’s new youth crime move, Police Assoc boss Wayne Gatt says “talk of maximum sentences is just spin… no-one in Victoria is going to get a life sentence”.. But he is cautiously optimistic “the threat of incarceration” will be a deterrent. “Govt’s finally got the memo.”
AG Kilkenny declares it won’t be up to the Childrens Court to decide which youth offenders are sent to higher courts. Under new laws - charges laid for home invasions, and aggravated carjacking, against anyone aged 14 and over - will go straight to the county court.
