New research from MPC Members J'Mag Karbeah @BeahboutIT & J. David Hacker @jdavidhacker612 utilizes the training and resources of the MPC and the incredible power of @ipums to look at this history of racial segregation and child mortality.@UMNresearch research.umn.edu/news/institute…
Segregation doubled the odds of some Black children dying in U.S. cities 100 years ago. New research by @BeahboutIT and @jdavidhacker612 shows structural racism in the 1900s harmed Black health in ways still being felt today. Me for @NewsfromScience science.org/content/articl…

In our new historical demography paper, @jdavidhacker612 and I examine the impact of racial residential segregation on child mortality using the 1900&1910 census. We show that even prior to the creation of Jim Crows, and HOLC maps, structural racism has impacted health. @minnpop
We started this paper 4(!) years ago and I asked every MPC/LCC seminar speaker I could for feedback and comments. Still in awe of how generous people were willing to be with their time. And of course huge thanks to @jdavidhacker612 who has really championed this work!
