How did European cities get their human-centric streets and public spaces? Why could they escape the car-dependent status quo, while North America seemingly can’t? There's one EASY trick planners and engineers don't want you to know about: Street Experiments. 🧵 1/

You had to use AI to make this because not 1 of the existing 1400 neighborhood retail establishments looks like this. You oppose a figment of your imagination, not reality.

This week City Council will vote on the proposed Neighbourhood Retail Plan which is the most transformative zoning change in 70 years. It will allow retail businesses to open on interior residential streets across Toronto. Gord Perks and Josh Matlow are big proponents of this…

All it takes is paint to speed up transit. Great to see #RapidTO taking shape on Bathurst street in Toronto.

First look 👀 at new #RapidTO transit priority installation on Bathurst south of Fort York. More white line painting to come, but a great start! What do you think?

What 30 trains per hour at 99.9% reliability looks like.

Decided to deliberately miss two trains on the MTR and time the duration between the doors closing and then opening on the following service. Gap between the first and second train was 65 seconds and the gap between the second and third train was 56 seconds. The gold standard 🚇

Pictures like this underscore why it’s essential Metrolinx and the Government of Ontario successfully pull off GO Expansion. Regional express rail on all seven GO Lines would be transformative. It’s essentially building a surface subway for the entire GTHA.

It is incredible how much money Toronto and Ontario will spend on building “new” transit that is among the world’s worst services when it opens. Yes, it is still better than what came before. But the bar called “standards” is on the floor.

Here's a video of the impossible. The UP Express has high platforms and level boarding for passengers. That's supposed to make it impossible for mainline North American freight trains to pass. Yet CN freight trains roll past the high platform at Weston multiple times per week.

There’s nothing more Toronto than refusing to finish the main highway into the Rogers centre when the world is visiting Toronto. PS it’s scheduled to open in 3 days

This is worth emphasizing: Bike Lanes in Toronto are wide enough for emergency vehicles, giving them a super express lane to save people faster.

Last weekend saw a lot of road closures in Toronto. Great to see ambulances using bike lanes to get people in distress where they need to go quickly. The trope touted by Ford that bike lanes delay EMS response times has been proven false repeatedly. #bikelanessavelives

Absolutely zero accountability on yet another Eglinton Crosstown LRT delay. We couldn’t get answers from Premier Ford, his transportation minister or Metrolinx on why testing stopped, when it will resume, and whether or not this puts a 2025 opening in jeopardy:

The very public desire to BuildToronto™️, expressed by young engineers and tech creatives rn, feels so much deeper than ElbowsUp patriotism. Anxious and thin anti-Trumpism is reaction where negation stands in for civic imagination. One culture critiques, the other wants to build.

Being bullish on Canada is not anti-memetic or anti-signal if the trend of more people desiring to be here continues. This is your friendly reminder that the bay is an echo chamber. Money, Talent, and Customers are solvable problems. What you can't solve for is a culture that…

Being that Brightline West is 350km long the mew price works out to just about 60 million USD per km which actually only a bit above the global average for HSR projects. Tho this project is not very technically difficult compared to other global HSR projects.

The agreement that Metrolinx has made with CN to allow much more train service by building new infrastructure in their right of ways is basically the best solution imaginable short of a total change in how railways work in North America. Should be doing in far more places.
