This is its own kind of disinformation. Not the statements about them, but the events themselves are false. Also called the propaganda of the deed, as against the word.
BREAKING: Va.'s GOP Attorney General Jason Miyares announces he will create an "Election Integrity Unit" that will prosecute alleged election law violations. Will have 20+ attorneys. Va. has not seen significant issues with voter fraud.
This isn’t a crit of the Times because this IS what Trump claims. But it’s worth slowing down and absorbing just how absurd this claim is, not so much as a matter of power as simple logic. We’re supposed to believe that it made sense that any document, including the most …
OK, Secret Service phones were wiped. So were those of Homeland Security. Now reportedly the same with the Pentagon. Anyone want to explain what was going on here?
I repeat: the only people who were fully prepared to cover the Trump presidency properly were people who knew how authoritarian regimes worked. The Washington press corps, which treats politics as something between a baseball game and a Broadway show, was woefully unprepared.
A standard for politics coverage has started to emerge among a handful of journalists, columnists and critics. Newsrooms should ask themselves: are we doing everything we can to make sure that Americans understand the stakes in the 2022 and 2024 elections? We need that to spread.
Read @sarahposner's thread on candidates who embrace the stolen election lie and endorse subverting the will of voters. As they get closer and closer to winning office, the press has to figure out how to make the stakes clear.

1) Let me tell you a crazy story. It's consumed 2 years of my life. As COVID-19 shut down the world in April 2020, I decided to follow the money. I began with a call to a no-name federal contractor who’d somehow landed a $35M deal for masks. Hours later, I’m on a private jet …
It’s wild to me that one political party has all but abandoned democracy and been overtaken by wild conspiracy theories and the media is still covering the fall midterm elections like, “LOL. The GOP will win in a landslide because gas prices are up and there are CRT kids books.”
I can’t get this tweet out of my head. Literally every media outlet is calling them “restrictions” when they should be calling them “protections” and that choice is absolutely killing people.

Old enough to remember when the @NYTimes would have led with this story, page 1, above the fold, bold extra large font
Old enough to remember when it would have been shocking to see a former president admit that his goal was to have "overturned the Election."
"Any hope that our country’s elite political journalists might heed the increasingly clamorous calls from former colleagues and media critics to adopt a pro-democracy approach to their coverage pretty much died this week," writes @froomkin. presswatchers.org/2022/01/by-the…

By their acts, top newsrooms reject calls to be 'pro-democracy' | Press Watch
Genuine pro-democracy reporters wouldn't just chronicle its death, they would write enthusiastically about what would help it survive.
In the heart of Delhi, raising Nazi-style salutes, hundreds vow: “We all pledge, that until our last breath, we will make India a Hindu nation. We will fight and die and, if required, kill.” Fascism is risen in India, and the world turns blind eyes.
This right here is my person of the year. May blessings rain down on you and your fellow Capitol Police Officers.
And he is never held to account for it. He's allowed to very publicly & theatrically kill climate policy without ever even being asked about his conflicts of interest. Maybe some of these journalists wandering the halls of the Senate could ask him?
Daily reminder: Joe Manchin, the guy gutting Democratic climate policy, is the No. 1 recipient of oil & gas lobbying money in the Senate. He & his wife make more than a million dollars a year from a coal brokerage company. It's naked conflict of interest & corruption.
"CHOOSE REALITY" is a helluva slogan for a newspaper. 🔥🔥🔥 But it's a bit undermined by the "explore all sides" message. (All reality-based sides, yes!)
The Los Angeles Times is dedicated to providing the fact-based resources individuals need to ensure the health and stability of the community. With misinformation circulating online, it’s more important than ever to explore all sides of every story. Visit latimes.com/covid
Dan @froomkin has been rewriting news stories from Washington that demonstrate all the bad habits of the political press. The rewrites can be quite instructive. presswatchers.org/2021/10/arsoni…
Awful new poll findings: * 76% of those who trust Fox News or other right wing media believe 2020 was stolen * Only 12% of those who trust those right wing media sources blame 1/6 on Trump. 64% blame leftists Right wing media is helping wreck democracy: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…
Precisely the wrong approach by the NYT nytimes.com/2021/08/27/us/… - potential rollbacks in US democracy shouldn't be covered with partisan game frames.
