“Love truth and peace.” Zechariah 8:19 Truth-based peace. And. Peace-pursuing truth. A rare and difficult pair.

God. “How great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!” Zechariah 9:17

25 centuries have not changed what is true and just and good. “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath.”…

God never owes us anything. All we have or ever will have is from free grace. “Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine.” Job 41:11

Who preaches like this? “Let us all be exhorted to endeavour to get our hearts affected with the perils of the day wherein we live.” —John Owen Labor to get our hearts affected. (!) Think of the theology of sanctification behind this exhortation.

“I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst.” Zechariah 2:5 These are the two dimensions of salvation: Protection and Presence. Safety and Satisfaction. Deliverance and Delight. Rescue and Rejoicing.

Every word is chosen to intensify Christ’s final judgment. “Christ will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.” Revelation 19:15

The fate of those for whom God is a nonfactor. “The Lord will punish the men who are complacent, those who say in their hearts, ‘The Lord will not do good, nor will he do ill.’” Zephaniah 1:12

“Guilty men, whose own might is their god!” Habakkuk 1:11

“By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast.” Job 37:10 This is not deism.

“The soldiers said, ‘Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.’ This was to fulfill the Scripture.” John 19:24 Such is the meticulous providence of God in this world.

“You, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” Micah 5:2 “And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,…

Because of Christmas. And Good Friday. And Easter. “Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands grow weak. The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”…

“His brightness was like the light; rays flashed from his hand; and there he veiled his power.” Habakkuk 3:4 “He covers his hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark.” Job 36:32

Our hope is based on God’s delight. “Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.” Micah 7:18

Gutsy guilt. Glorious. “Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me. I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes judgment for me. He will…

It is a happy requirement. That we walk with God. And, of course, humbly. “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8 (וְהַצְנֵ֥עַ לֶ֖כֶת עִם־אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ)

“He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity.” Job 36:15 We hear what we could not hear. And escape what we did not know was bondage.

“Job opens his mouth in empty talk; he multiplies words without knowledge.” Job 35:16 Lord, shut our mouths when they are not informed with knowledge.

Christmas purpose. Christmas response. Jesus said, “I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” John 18:37
