This is what you're missing if you're not following linguists on twitter
Look for this bag during the poster session, and learn about my new project on heritage Cantonese in Toronto #NWAV53 (special thanks to Jon Chui @jkwchui for sending this lovely bag my way right in time for NWAV!)
Chapter by Angelika Kiss, Roger Lo and myself on Cantonese sentence-final particles in rhetorical questions is finally out 😊

It's well documented that Chinese people had font support issues since early Western Zhou.
It is that time of year again for linguistics students to start thinking of graduate school applications. In order to help them out, I wrote the following blog post. ordinaryworkinggrammarian.blogspot.com/2019/12/writin…
Someone asked why “Our Father in Heaven” in the Lord’s Prayer in Taiwanese is 阮佇天裡的父 and not 咱佇天裡的父 Well it’s because in Taiwanese 阮 (goán) excludes the listener and 咱 (lán) includes the listener. The listener or the object of our prayer is God

Cool post I stumbled upon explaining why 豬腸 became 豬番 in Teochew... but it just irks me a bit when people say things "rhyme" when they are *homophones*... They're technically not wrong but what about the maxim of quantity 🤓
I got feedback, and rewrote this: "Thinking Syntactically (for non-linguists)". If you are a non-linguist, I would be very interested to hear what you think about it. ordinaryworkinggrammarian.blogspot.com/2025/09/thinki…
Have you heard the Bible in Old English? This Creationtide, listen to the Old English translation of the Genesis story of creation, made by the Anglo-Saxon monk Ælfric in the tenth century - the first time people in England heard the Bible in church in their native language.
Just learned today that some people write #Cantonese jyun4 dam4 doe4 /jyn˨˩ tɐm˨˩ tœ˨˩/ 'very round' (ideophonic form of 圓 jyun4 'round') as "圓 dum the" 😂
Jesus defeated death so you can live.
Lord have mercy 😔. Lord come soon.
I made a chrome extension that automatically downloads Wiktionary audio data for a given word and optionally converts it into a .wav file so you can immediately plug it into praat. github.com/jhnwnstd/wikti…

in Fuzhounese you can call the left and right hands the "small side hand" and "big side hand" 𝒐𝒓 the "bowl-holding hand" and "chopstick-holding hand" 🍜
Fuzhounese is ofc famous for having not only tone sandhi but *also* sandhi-ing consonants. Not only so, its tone sandhi can also change its vowels! For example, the syllable /pouʔ˨˧/ is sandhi’d to /βuʔ˨˩/ in the word 跤腹頭 /kʰa˦˦ pouʔ˨˧ tʰau˥˧/ [kʰa˨˩ βuʔ˨˩ tʰau˥˧] “kneecap”
omggg I found a whole series of Chinese dialect guides from the 90s, all with IPA transcription and detailed notes on phonology, vocabulary and grammar 🤯 this is the book for Fuzhou, and they also have Haikou (Hainanese), Shantou (Teochew), Meixian(Hakka), Wenzhou etc. etc.
I have just released 50,000 characters of new Jyutping-annotated Cantonese works, parallel with English / standard written Chinese translations, in multiple formats. Our signature tone-marks and placement removes confusion with tones. 🧵1 / 5
I am utterly shocked and saddened by the news of Andrew West‘s untimely passing. He was a huge inspiration, an impressive scholar, and a kind and generous person. FAMA PER ORA VOLAT SPIRITUS ASTRA TENET
10 июля умер Эндрю Вест - один из лучших людей, которых я знал. Честный, прямой, верный, мудрый, ранимый. Лучший знаток древних письменностей, создатель множества шрифтов, точно имеющий дар слышать мысли их создателей, давно ушедших. Теперь ушёл и он. babelstone.co.uk
