So it turns out that in addition to AI water consumption panic energy consumption is baseless as well. As a rule I don't trust any OpenAI claim but this reported energy consumption seems to be in the ballpark of Llama70B usage +- one order of magnitude arxiv.org/html/2407.1689…
Out of curiosity I decided to try and run the numbers on how much Netflix you can watch for the energy cost of a ChatGPT prompt As far as I can tell it's between 5.1 and 10.2 seconds, depending on which end of the 2019 IEA Netflix energy usage estimate you use
