So it turns out that in addition to AI water consumption panic energy consumption is baseless as well. As a rule I don't trust any OpenAI claim but this reported energy consumption seems to be in the ballpark of Llama70B usage +- one order of magnitude arxiv.org/html/2407.1689…
Out of curiosity I decided to try and run the numbers on how much Netflix you can watch for the energy cost of a ChatGPT prompt As far as I can tell it's between 5.1 and 10.2 seconds, depending on which end of the 2019 IEA Netflix energy usage estimate you use
"I used AI to create Minecraft from scratch!" "It is just a few hundred lines!" pretty much sums the hype around AI replacing software devs.
