I slightly disagree on who performs the Coaching Kata. Everyone can learn the basics of the Coaching Kata and it shall not be limited to Managers and Senior staff. Grow people, not hierarchies, even i feel the intention of that pre-given reply.

Managers, supervisors & team leaders play a big role in building the scientific-thinking skill & culture that's foundational for continuous improvement, adaptation and innovation. Toyota Kata gives managers Starter Kata for practicing behaviors that create such skill & culture.

Want to scale up a scientific-thinking culture? Ensure that managers, supervisors and team leaders reinforce target behaviors. Not sure what those behaviors should be? Begin by practicing the Toyota Kata Starter Kata, then build on their patterns to evolve your own way!

Of course, a coach should have some expertise in the topic they're coaching. A baseball coach doesn't coach soccer. If you want to coach your team in the 4-step Improvement Kata pattern & its associated Starter Kata, you should first practice / get familiar with them yourself.

Coaching is a skill and takes practice to learn. A class and a few hours of practice won't produce transformational, sustainable behavior change. Asking managers to be coaches = asking them to do things that contradict some ingrained habits. How do they learn new behaviors?

The 'starter' practice process in the Toyota Kata Practice Guide gets teams & organizations on the path of developing greater scientific thinking. Your practice approach should then evolve from there, as you develop your own way to suit your own situation. amazon.com/dp/1259861023

The Toyota Kata research found that developing scientific-thinking skill and mindset is an invisible element underlying the visible Lean practices at Toyota. It's arguably what makes the practices work as intended, and helps to make continuous improvement possible.

Here's a nice humorous photo suggesting what Lean without Toyota Kata is like. Actually, would be better to say "Lean without scientific thinking." That matches the TK research findings. Practicing Toyota Kata is a way to develop greater scientific thinking.
