In agriculture, prices can rise or crash overnight and when they do, it’s the farmers who pay the highest price. After months of hard work, smallholder farmers bring their harvests to market, only to find that prices have dropped below the cost of production.
In line with the United Nations’ call to achieve Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and build sustainable food systems, Farmers’ Consumer Awareness Day reminds us of the vital link between those who grow our food and those who consume it.
“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.” Proverbs 12:11 As we pause to reflect this Sunday, we are reminded that farming is more than a profession, it’s a calling.
Smallholder farmers are the backbone of Nigeria’s food system, yet they are the most vulnerable when market prices collapse. Poor price stabilization mechanisms mean that farmers have no safety net.
Fellow Nigerians, A fair tax system must never punish poverty or weigh down the most vulnerable. With the new tax laws I recently signed, taking effect from January 2026, we have lifted this burden and created a path of equity, fairness, and true redistribution in our economy.…
Agriculture thrives on predictability. When there are predictable seasons, predictable yields, and most importantly, predictable prices. When prices swing wildly from one harvest season to the next, investors see risk, not opportunity.
Agriculture doesn’t just depend on rain and soil, it depends on trust. Whether local or foreign, investors commit money to farming because they believe the policies guiding the sector will remain clear, consistent, and fair.
In Nigeria’s agricultural markets, middlemen often carry a double-edged reputation. To some, they are exploiters, buying farm produce at low prices during glut and reselling at a profit, whereas to others, they are survivors, filling a critical gap in a fragile supply chain.
In rural Nigeria, poverty is often rooted in one simple problem which is inconsistent farming. When farmers rely solely on rain-fed agriculture, their entire income and food supply come from one short growing season.
Earlier this week, we had the honor of hosting a delegation from the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE) Initiative, our invaluable partners in driving sustainable change through the Sustainable Agriculture Youth Engagement Program (SAYEP).
In many parts of Nigeria, farming has traditionally been tied to the rains. But what happens when the rainy season ends? This is where Dry Season Farming comes in. With dry season farming, we experience transformation of lives, food supply, and economic sustainability.
For smallholder farmers, water is life but how that water is sourced matters just as much. Traditionally, diesel-powered irrigation has been the go-to solution. But it's becoming clear that solar-powered irrigation is the smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable alternative,
Today, we celebrate the men who lead with love, provide with purpose, and show up day after day as fathers, mentors, protectors, and role models. To every father who: teaches by example, builds with his hands and heart, nurtures dreams as carefully as he nurtures his children,
What’s Happening to Our Land? Every year, about 24 billion tons of fertile soil are lost to desertification. That’s not just land, it’s lost harvests, lost nutrition, and lost livelihoods. In 2 days, we go live on Google Meet to tackle the hard truths about land degradation
In the heart of Ibaji Local Government Area, Kogi State, something powerful is happening, not just in kilowatts, but in impact. At Hemam, through the support of the African Development Bank (ADB) under the Rural Electrification Agency – Nigeria Electrification Project (REA-NEP),
From the smallholder farmer harvesting rice in the fields to the family serving dinner at home, food safety is a shared responsibility. At Hemam, we believe safe food starts at the source, with good agricultural practices, clean handling, and honest stewardship of the land.
Eid al-Kabir Mubarak from all of us at Hemam! As we celebrate this season of sacrifice, gratitude, and togetherness, we honor the values that unite us: Faith, generosity, and care for one another. To every farmer, family, and community we serve:
Hello, June👋🏼 But first… a moment for May 😊 From honoring the hands that heal on International Midwives Day, to spotlighting the tiny pollinators that help feed the world on World Bee Day, May was a month of gratitude, growth, and grounding. ...
