'In 1558, Thomas Gresham coined Gresham's Law: "Bad money drives out good."… anyone who gets a dodgy coin spends it as quickly as they can… Run this system long enough and all the money in circulation is funny money… Google has its own Gresham's Law: bad sites drive out good.'

A funny thing happened on the way to the enshittocene: Google - which astonished the world when it reinvented search, blowing Altavista and Yahoo out of the water with a search tool that seemed *magic* - suddenly turned into a pile of shit. 1/

📣👏 Happy #PublicationDay to @EleanorFordFood for her beautiful new book A Whisper of Cardamom @ckbk subscribers can access in full today.🙌 Food writer @ramonaandrews interviews Eleanor to discover more about the spices that feature in her favourite recipes…

Yes. This is 100% the type of use we envisioned at @BioMedCentral when rolling out open licensing so that open access articles could be built on and reused and mined and aggregated + read by computers, not just humans. How best to meet @creativecommons attribution reqt though?

This is amazing! @PLOS is the 7th largest single source of training data for ChatGPT! Without commenting on the legality or ethics of their use of proprietary content, this is a type of use we envisioned at its founding and which we explicitly chose to enable (ht @weinberz).

We wanted to remove tracking from @ckbk (the app doesn't even show ads!), but it was harder than it looked to disable it due to an app store glitch. Thanks to Adam Engst at @TidBITS who encouraged us and wrote up the story... tidbits.com/2023/03/15/hel…

This is overdue… still masking in dentist waiting room, for example. Just makes no sense.

It's time to put patients first again and get rid of the mask "requirement" in healthcare settings Agree? Please sign and share our NEW open letter to NHS Chief Executives 👇 smilefree.org/nhs/ Already signed by dozens of Doctors, Healthcare Professionals and Scientists

This is a super important point which it often seems almost nobody gets. It’s not just that interventions may not be helpful. They can and often are damaging in unexpected ways. You can’t just assume “maybe it will help, and anyway it can’t hurt”. It can!

What is the problem with the "Standard of care"? Once you issue a "standard of care" without the requisite evidence, you have no idea if you are merely standardising HARM Think this can't happen? There are plenty of examples, in fact Covid-19 has given us some of the best 6/

For anyone who’s read @DanielEllsberg’s superb book “Secrets”, this will not be a surprise. Same problem that US faced in Vietnam. bbc.co.uk/news/world-eur…

I’m wondering why this clip shows only show one side of the exchange, if the argument was so robust and effective? Is there *any* evidence for the striking claim that it is specifically mask mandates which have led to the decline of the omicron wave in England?@trishgreenhalgh

100% agree. Gut-wrenching to read these statements.

When all restrictions are ended-as they shld be immediately-all convictions and penalty notices issued under all Health Protection regulations shld be cancelled & fines repaid. There must be a collective admission that this should never have happened and must never happen again.

Have been intrigued to discover many clever things about @NASAWebb including fact that it doesn't need to hit a specific L2 orbit - it can adaptively "fall into" one of a range of orbits, of various possible shapes, depending on launch date jwst-docs.stsci.edu/jwst-observato… #kerbal #nbody
